Creepy Elmo news?

Somebody mentioned Elmo in the DVD thread which reminded me of a story I saw on the Today show this morning. Apparently the guy who does the voice of Elmo (Kevin Clash) is being accused of having a relationship a few years back with a 16 year old boy. Kevin clash is 52 now and would have been about 47-48 at the time. Kevin admits to the relationship, but says it started when the boy was 18 and a consenting adult. He is taking a break from being Elmo right now. Thoughts? Being gay is more than fine in my book... but the age gap here, and the possibility it started when the kid was a minor... creeps me out. Don't know how I feel about Elmo right now.

    I saw the story, too. It breaks my heart in many ways and I hope it isn't true.

    Like you said, being gay isn't a problem. Sex (heterosexual or homosexual) with a minor is. If he was 18, though, the age gap is gross but a moot point, as far as I'm concerned.

    What I read is Sesame Workshop asked him to take a break. They have done an investigation to make sure no one else was involved and they are saying the claims are unsubstantiated. L
    Kevin Clash is still an ahole though. He apparently makes his parents go through his publicist to talk to him. He participated in a fundraiser at my work and threw Elmo around and stuffed him into a bag on stage in front of the kids and his demands were ridiculous.

    This gives tickle me Elmo a whole new meaning...Even if the kid was 18 I still thinks it is sick to be in a sexual relationship with someone that much younger.

    Really?  All this makes me so sad!  DH and I just watched the documentary Being Elmo a little while ago and were so impressed with this guy.  It's rather disappointing to think he might be such a jerk with performances, his parents and a young, impressionable boy (whether 16 or 18 when it started).

    He's from a low SES historically black area where I work. We used the book about Henrietta Lacks if anyone is familiar with her as a community book connection book last year. Our Mass Comm department partnered with a group from the neighborhood he's from to do a fundraiser and start a scholarship. He was a total douchecanoe and said he wouldn't commit to showing up if he got offered a better gig and they ended up having to move the date up at last minute. The whole thing was crazy.

    As an aside we saw an Elmo potty chair in Walmart a few weeks ago that DH now refers to as "sh*t on me Elmo".

    I saw that but then I had to ask myself if those 2 years really made a difference on whether or not he was a creep. He is 52! Yuck. 

    That's my thoughts on it, too, Crystal.  It might be legal as soon as the boy hit 18, but that doesn't make it ethical.
