STMs- passing out from labor pain?

Now that I'm about half way through my pregnancy I think the labor anxiety is kicking in.  I have a history of, when extreme pain, getting really close to throwing up, getting super dizzy and then almost (or really) passing out.  I am curious how this might play itself out during labor.  Clearly, nothing I've been through in my life has been as painful as labor.  Is is possible to be in so much pain that you throw up, get dizzy and pass out?

Re: STMs- passing out from labor pain?

  • I've heard of all of those things happening to people.  Mostly the throwing up/dizzy part (pretty common, actually) but I have a friend who passed out and had to be woken up.  Just make sure that our doctors and nurses are aware that you passing out is a possibility so they can be prepared if it happens.  It won't be the first time they've dealt with it, I'm sure.

  • I don't really have any experience with the condition that you have but I wanted to say that I had pretty bad back labor and you just power throu it.  I think you're so focused at the task at hand, you get through it.  Also it's normal to throw up during labor.  Usually it's when you're transitioning, right before being fully dialated.  Try not to freak yourself out, your body was designed to do this and you'll be fine.

  • I don't know if it was the pain but with my 1st I threw up while pushing. Try not to stress too much. There will be medical staff there to help you through everything. I was so scarred to go into labor with my 1st. I remember thinking I wish I could just be pregnant and not push him out, lol. It wasn't as bad as I though but was painful. Not the worst pain but a different kind. It's scarry being a FTM but soon you will have your bundle in your arms and all the pain seems to disappear after that. It is scary to think about pushing a baby out of you, I know. Try to relax and remember you will have help the whole time and your body will know what to do. Listen to your body and have faith in yourself. You can do this!
  • I really doubt you could pass out during labor.  You may throw up though.  It is very common during transition.  I wouldn't worry though, you won't care when it is happening!
  • My daughter was not full term (see siggy), but I did throw up when in labor with her.  My best friend did when she was in labor with her full term baby as well.  I think that is pretty common.  I did not get dizzy or feel that I would pass out however.

I would not stress about this in advance.  If you do, you do, and it's not the end of the world.  I knew it was coming and hubby got me a trash can fast enough.  However, plenty of ladies don't go through any of those things regardless of history so don't give mental energy to something that may not happen :)

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • I didn't pass out, but I did throw up almost the entire time. Just make sure your doctor and nurses are aware of the possibilities.

  • I just want to throw this out there~

My water broke on it's own after a few minutes of contractions. Not painful, but very distracting. LOL. I went to the hospital and did not need any pain meds, because I went so fast AND because I really was not in that much pain. The most pain I felt was when pushing and he kept playing peek-a-boo. But again, not really that bad.

And another, a younger friend of mine just had her daughter, and did not feel too much pain, she too went natural.

I am not saying don't get the pain meds, if you want them go for them. I am expecting pain this time, but I am not going to let myself get over freaked until the pain hits. We prepare ourselves by making ourselves think of all the horrors, but what a suprise when it goes easy and smooth. DOn't freak out to much, people throw up durring labor a lot I have heard, it actually helps them sometimes. People get dizzy too. Like PP said, just inform the Nurses and OB that you could pass out, so they can keep an eye out on you. But breathe dear. It will be okay.

  • I recommend that you educate yourself as much as possible about what is actually happening to your body during labor (whether you're using medication or not); knowledge is power and if you have a better understanding of what your body is doing, you might experience less anxiety. I delivered naturally and didn't feel like the pain was unmanageable, but I think understanding what was happening and why it was happening was crucial. I did get pretty dizzy at one point, but that's because I wasn't breathing correcting and starting to hyperventilate. Luckily, my DH noticed and coached me through it (we did the Bradley Method, which was awesome). Throwing up is pretty common.

I would definitely let your providers know your concerns.

  • When I took my natural childbirth class, we watched a video and discussed how the body naturally reacts to the late stages of labor.  In the class, I learned that it is very normal to zone out (not really passing out, but more like being completely out of it) in between pushing.  I wound up getting an epidural after 12 hours of induced labor, but it didn't work during the late stages of labor, and that is exactly what I experienced.  My memory of the experience was that I was pushing every 30 seconds, when in reality, it was more like every few minutes.  It's your body's natural way of helping you cope with the pain.  I also threw up during labor, but it turned out to be a good thing, because it caused my water to break, avoiding having the doctors do it for me.
  • I threw up. A LOT. Even after my epidural-turned-spinal. I threw up during my c-section too.

  • I definitely vomited (a lot) from the pain, and got a bit dizzy from not being able to breathe deeply, but I did not pass out. I did eventually beg for an epi because I was not able to get a break from the pain or the vomiting.

ETA I started vomiting at only 4 cm and there was no way I was going to last a few more hours like that. Really hoping to avoid an induction this time.

  • No, I never passed out. I puked several times, though. Even during the cs. Please educate yourself on what happens to your body in labor. Knowledge is power.
  • With your history, you should talk to your OB about a reasonable labor plan.  They should know & be prepared for it.  Also, taking a child-birthing class should help you to feel more aware of what can happen, and in turn will help reduce some of your anxiety.  Sure, labor is labor & isn't going to be a walk in the park, but knowing what to expect can help a great deal.
  • I had a hard fast labor with DS, and I went med-free.  I've been a wimp all of my life.

Yes, I puked, but not exactly from pain...  Hard to explain.  My body just needed to get that outta the way, even though I hadn't eaten in about 16 hours.

I did not pass out or get dizzy though.  The pain is tough.  But you get through it.  It ends, and you have a beautfiul child in your arms.

  • Personally, I think gall bladder attacks and some dental pain is worse than labor. Don't psych yourself out too much over it...and when it is over, the pain is *poof* gone.
