Bottle for EBF baby??

So DS2 is three months old, and he won't take a bottle.  Ever.  I mean he's taken a bottle like twice in his entire life, and he REFUSES to do so now.  I want to let my mom watch him this Friday night so DH and I can take DS1 to the Christmas parade.......but I'm afraid that DS2 will starve (haha)!  Help!  Anybody else had this problem, and what bottle nipple worked??  I know we should have worked on this earlier, but I'm too lazy top pump often enough.  And now we're here.  Ugh.  What bottle nipples are particularly "breast-like"?? (lol!)

Re: Bottle for EBF baby??

  • I have no idea about "breast-like" bottles, but we are EBF and use Dr. Brown's. Good luck though! How long is the parade- is it in the same town? I think if it is and you are really worried you could just try to make sure you nurse before you leave, leave a bottle so your mom can try, and then nurse as soon as you get back if he didn't take it..

  • I had the same issue with going back to work - ds went hungry on day one but has gotten better and better at taking a bottle. Regarding what bottle works best, you'll get tons of suggestions but in the end they're all not mom. I have 6 different bottles and in the end ds took a Dr. Browns, the second one we tried. He'll take whatever now, (still never from me or if i am in the house) it was just getting past the imposture delivery system. Good luck.
  • Each baby is different.  We tried 3 brands of bottles/nipples before we found one that Seth liked and didn't cause confusion. We tried Medela and something else, I forget. But we found that the Avent Natural works best for us. Unfortunately, trial and error. Is it possible to have your husband try giving your son the bottle? I found that Seth hates when I bottle feed him but has no problem with my husband, day care or anyone else. With me,he wants the real thing.

  • Similac sent a bottle to me with their formula sample, and it looks surprsingly like a nipple.  If I hadn't already bought Avent (which I just bought because they worked for the girls), I'd probably have gotten those.

DH and I married 8 years. Mom of three, stepmom of one.

  • I struggled to get ds to take a bottle since he was 2 weeks old. He finally took one 5 weeks later, after numerous attempts. We used a medium flow nipple on a Tommee Tippee, with freshly pumped milk. To this day, it's the only way to get him to take a bottle.

It's gotten better about the fresh pumped milk thing. He'll take a little bit of freezer milk if it's mixed with fresh. At room temp, of course.

  • DD uses Tomme Tippe (can't remember if that's how it's spelled). My husband said last time she gagged a little bit when she took a bottle, but she got the hang of it pretty quickly. She's only had a bottle a few times, so hopefully we're not setting ourselves up for the same problem you're having!

  • I finally had some luck with the Avent natural.  DS has been getting bottles at daycare since 8 weeks and we have had no problem going back and forth from bottle to breast.  DS choked on the Medela nipples.  The similac bottles were actually a close second, they have a wide base too, but I melted one of the bottles when I sterilized it, and that was the end of that.

  • The Nuk bottles have been the best for us, followed by Tommee Tippee.

  • We use dr browns. We intro'd the bottle at 5 weeks and even still she isn't a huge fan. We make sure the milk is warm, and the nipple too.

  • tommee tippee is closest to a breast.  The whole top of the bottle is soft like the breast.  Give it a whirl.

  • Try a variable flow nipple. The Born Free fit the Dr. Browns bottles and Tommy Tippee makes one as well.

Variable flow means that the baby can control the flow rather than the nipple controlling the flow.

  • Though DD is fine with the bottle now (we use Tommee Tippee), here are some tips, which I am sure you have heard:

    1. Make sure you are out of the room, preferably out of the house so DS does not smell you.  DD takes a bottle from me now but initially if she even heard my voice or I walked in the door she would spit the bottle out.

    2. Until DS is comfortable with the bottle make sure whoever is giving him the bottle is not holding his head by their chest so he is not expecting a boob.

    3. Run the nipple under warm water before you give it to him.

  • We are dealing with the same thing although we have been trying to get her to take one for 4 weeks now and still no luck. I've now tried 10 different types of bottles, including the Dr. Browns, Tommee Tippee, Medela Calma and many more! I just got the First Years Breastflow today and tried it but didn't have any luck with it although I do believe this will probably be the only one that would work if she ever does take one since this is the first one that the nipple doesn't go sideways when she tries to suck from it because she tends to twirl her tongue around the bottle nipples. Good luck, it really is a pain! I sometimes regret having went to ebf because of this.

  • First Year "breastflow" bottles. They have an inner piece that the milk comes out of so they have to use their tongue more like on the real thing. it was reccommended to us by an LC

    LO won't take anything else.

  • I know how you feel! LO has taken almost every type of bottle once, then refuses it the next time. He is not taking any bottles at all right now. I've tried the playtex ventaire, similac, evenflow (came with breast pump), and Tommee tippee. We had the most success with the Tommee bottles but then LO started refusing those after four or five days. He seems to hate the feel of the silicone nipples and kinda just rolls them around in his mouth like he's not sure what to do with them. I just ran out to babies r us a few hours ago and bought the playtex nursery with the brown latex nipple. I am gonna try that tonight after DH gets home because I have heard good things. Btw I have a very fast let down so I bought the faster flow nipples. He isn't used to fighting for his milk.

    Good luck!

We're having the best luck with Lansinoh "Momma" bottles.  DD wouldn't take Medela or Born Free.

I've heard so many people rave about these for babies who won't take a bottle.

We use the Breastflow bottles from First Years, but DD has never had any problems with bottles.  It works a lot like the breast though, and I like the flow.  We have used Avents too and I think they're too fast compared to me and she was starting to cry at the breast.
