how long does active teething last?

My son has one lower tooth that has a little white piece of tooth that has popped through the gums, I can feel some of the sharpness (as of yesterday and a few days ago it hadn't come through the gums yet, but tonight it's through), and, around the tooth is bright red compared to the rest of the gums.  Also, he has been terribly fussy and sleepy badly. I am giving Tylenol and trying to rub a little Baby Orajel (pedi approved) on his gums. He doesn't like any of this teething toys, cold chews, mesh teether...pretty much only wants his hands!

For those of you Mom's with teeth that has come in...how long did this "active" teething last?

    It really depends on the child with ds it took weeks with some other kids just days.

    My son was usually only really drooly/cranky/chompy for a few days before each tooth erupted.  In fact, I didn't even realize his two year molars had come in until I noticed them while brushing his teeth!  My daughter hasn't gotten any teeth yet, but I'm hoping she's even half as easy a teether as my son was :)
