Secondary IF

What would you do?

We have a very long road, as I know most of you had and I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on my next steps. I feel so confused!

Here is our story:

Got pregnant first try with now 4 year old DS. Starting TTC #2 around 1.5-2 years later. We tried for almost a yr and no luck. Saw RE, had HSG and he said I had scar tissue wrapped around one of my tubes as the dye sort of pocketed when it came out of tube. He suggested IVF. I thought it was a little aggressive so we tried TI, then TI+Clomid, then IUI + Clomid. All BFN. He strongly urged me to move onto IVF as he thought perhaps my tubes were more damaged than it appeared. I became pregnant with twins and sadly lost them at 18 weeks due to pre-term labor.

Took some time to heal, went back to RE and did a FET. BFN. Recommended a fresh IVF cycle and BFN. He was very frustrated with me it seemed and actually mentioned a surrogate, which my OB thought was crazy so I decided to move on and get a few more opinions. All other opinions were to re-do HSG as one actually thought my old x-ray looked normal. I re-did it and results were prefect. No blockage at all.

DH and I were confused. No issues apparently, but we still can't get pregnant? We took 2 cycles to just take a mental break and try on our own (BFN). Then decided to move fwd with new RE and try a natural IUI (BFN). She then suggested follistim + IUI (BFN).....SO HERE WE ARE:

I am exhausted. I want nothing more than to have a sibling for my son who asks for one on an almost daily basis. I am tired of fighting for this and am so confused as to what is going on to make it not happen. my RE wants me to try one more IUI + Follistim, perhaps being slightly more aggressive on the meds. I go to see her on Friday.

I am completely on the fence. Do I just move ahead to IVF which I know will have a much greater shot of working or do I give the IUI just one more try. Part of me just wants to move on to what will give me a better shot, but then the other part of me thinks, hey what's two more months before going to to IVF.

I am so frustrated and confused. Can someone please let me know what they would do if they were me? Thank you in advance for reading my novel :(

Re: What would you do?

  • That sure is a rough road, I am so sorry for your losses.

Most RE's do IVF's in big groups, they can sometimes take a little bit to accept a new person in...usually having to wait for the current group to get done before starting another.

I would go ahead and do the IUI with Follistim once more...since you would probably have to wait for the next IVF group to start up anyway...might as well spend the time wisely :)

    Good luck!

  • I feel you have already answered you own question when you said you know the IVF will have a much better shot at working. I am so sorry you are going thru this.

I have a 4 yr old (in Jan) daughter who constantly asks why she doesn't have a sibling so I understand the desparation to be able to achieve that for not only yourself but for them.

We conceived her on our first try with no issues, we wanted to have our children close in age so we started trying for another one right away and after 2 yrs nothing. We found out my husband has MFI and it was a miracle we even conceived her. We are going thru our first IVF and it is the hardest thing I have ever done but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Good luck and I will be thinking of you.
