Pregnant after a Loss

How soon to buy baby furniture?

Don't worry, I'm not going shopping today Stick out tongue

There will be a good opportunity for DH and I to do baby furniture shopping in the week between X-mas and New Year (we'll both be off work). I'll be between 25-26wks at that point. Will I be stressing myself out that I bought it too soon?

Thanks in advance for your input. I know this question gets asked all the time on this board, but of course right now I can't remember what any of the responses were. Wink

  • Are you planning on getting stuff that needs to be special ordered or might take a while to come in? I went baby furniture shopping with a friend and they quoted her 4 weeks max for one of the pieces that they didn't have in stock. Everything else she got within a week. However, I remember when my cousin was having her baby, it took over 3 months to get the crib she wanted. If you're not too picky, then I'd say waiting until after the holidays is just fine. Our plan is to wait until a month before the due date, since we aren't going to be buying tons of stuff anyway (skipping the changing table this time, just getting a crib and dresser, and they don't have to by matchy matchy and the dresser will be a regular one, not a nursery special one).

  • We haven't bought anything yet.  DH and I went to go look this past weekend to get an idea of what we'll need, but I was a bit overwhelmed.  I think I need to take some time during the holidays to completely clear out the 2nd bedroom before I buy anything.  I'm also interested to hear what others say about how soon is too soon.

  • We waited until 24-25 weeks and then DH made me go crib and car seat shopping just in case things needed to be special ordered (which, for our car seat, turned out to be the case). I'll be honest and say that going into the big stores really stressed me out....all I kept thinking of was that we might end up returning all of this if something goes wrong. I found that, for me, looking at things online first helped calm my nerves a little bit and that way when we went into the big stores I could just focus on one thing at a time.

  • Thanks ladies, I never even THOUGHT about the special order thing, or that certain items may not be in stock. All I was thinking about was that DH and I will both be home from work, and therefore it's a good opportunity. It does scare me, but I think I'll be okay by then.

  • I think that's a good time to go. Several places I looked had an order time of up to 12 weeks. We are still waiting on our glider to come in!

  • If that's when you both have free time, do it then.  Things often take awhile to come in, then you have to find the time to assemble them.  Just because you BUY them right then, doesn't mean they'll be assembled right away.  You can keep them in a box until you're ready.  Trust me though that it's better to have the nursery more set up than not before you get into late 3rd Tri.  All the bending and being on your feet...it gets hard.

  • I think that's fine. Mine took a few weeks to come in and setting it up was a big chore too.

We bought cribs really early b/c we were making at trip to ATL where the Ikea is. I think we bought them about 16w or so. Our chair we ordered shortly after because it was going to take awhile to come in, especially with the holidays.

More importantly, I felt like I needed to start the process in order to feel like this was happening. DH and I talked and agreed that having/not having furniture wasn't going to make a loss hurt less. I was really struggling to feel connected and putting the nursery together slowly along the way has helped a lot.

Do whatever makes you feel best!

The bolded paragraph REALLY helped me Jbug, thank you! I think I will be really ready to have that stuff in my house by the new year, but I felt for some reason that I need to hold myself back. I'm going to do it, and enjoy it!

This.  It's exactly why I broke my own rule about buying a couple maternity items and starting to post here before the end of my first trimester.   I think PP's have made great points about fatigue, special ordering, etc.

I'm starting to freak out because I have lots of friends who will be giving us stuff and the first load of it will be coming home with us the first week of December.  I'll be 16+ weeks at that point.  I'm freaked that it's SO crazy early, I'm freaked about where we're going to put it all in our 1 bedroom apartment and I'm really freaked about how my DH will react.  He's been pretty distant about this whole pregnancy and I'm worried this will create a conflict.  :-/
