XP from 6-9 mo: Sudden sleep issues (long)

DS is almost 7 months old and started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks old. He was a pro napper, and never really protested being put down for a nap or bedtime, and if he did, it was just a few minutes of whimpering and then he'd calm down and talk to himself until he fell asleep.

About 2 weeks ago, he started screaming and wailing whenever we tried to put him down in his crib. Not regular cries, but those awful cries babies have in which they let out a long wail until they are out of breath and there's no sound even coming out of their mouths. It's as if he is in a terrible amount of pain...but he's not. We'd up picking him up and settling him, and rock him to sleep in our arms because every time we'd try to put him down in his crib, he'd scream again. Since then he has spent almost every night co-sleeping with DH & I.

At first, I thought that he just didn't want to sleep, or didn't want to sleep alone. But the past few times I've tried to put him down for naps, I've put him down on our bed without laying down with him and he has no issues falling right asleep and staying asleep, even when I transfer him to his crib. It may sound weird but it's as if he can't fall asleep on his crib mattress.

He has no problem being put down any other time than when it's time for naps or sleep, so it's not a problem of just wanting to be held, or reflux or discomfort associated with being put flat on his back, or anything of that nature. It really seems like the crib mattress is the problem...which presents a problem for me because I know that the mattresses can't be too soft or anything in their cribs.

Thoughts?

  • When you put him down in your room were you in the room putzing around?  Could it be separation anxiety that when he is in his crib, you are actually leaving the vicinity?

That thought crossed my mind, too, before we realized that he would fall asleep on our bed, so we'd put him down in his crib and stay in the room and he would still scream. I even tried standing over him while he was in his crib, sitting next to him while he was in the crib, and keeping my hand on him while he was in there. He wouldn't tolerate being in his crib no matter what.

  • Is it cold?? I put flannel sheets on at this time of year since normal ones are cold to the touch and my boys hated the feel on their faces. I'd bet your bed is warmer with the covers and all.
