Circumcision at 2 weeks...

I don't get on here very often, so I am sorry if it is a repeat.

At my midwifery visit today, I asked about the procedure for circumcision. She said they will do it in the midwifery office when the baby is two weeks old. Is this normal? Any experiences you can share?

Re: Circumcision at 2 weeks...

  • I've never seen a midwife, but with a hospital birth and a pediatrician that sees your baby asap, they do it the day after birth while still in the hospital. Also, why would the midwife do it?

  • I'm not sure why she will do it. I was just asking about the process and that was my answer. I have never heard of that before...
  • Where I am, it is common for the OB to perform the procedure. She does it the day after he is born while we're still in the hospital.

  • A midwife delivered my sons but a pediatrician was the one who did the circumcisms.  It was done the day after they were born.

I have a girl already but I was in the nursery while they were doing a circumcision on one of the other babies while I sitting with her while she sunbathed. One of the OB's did it I believe.

  • Some people choose to wait so that the whole hospital experience is less traumatic for the baby. I kind of wish we had, but we did have our OB do it in the hospital.

The Dr. that does it at the hospital varies by state/region - in some places the Pediatrician does it, in some places the OB does it. It depends on who carries the surgery malpractice insurance.

My parents always did home births, so they had a rabbi who was experienced with circumcision do it.

I was wondering why it varied from place to place.

  • Agreed that it varies by region.

In Ontario (or at least the Toronto area) the procedure is performed 2 weeks after birth by a Urologist. The OB's in my area no longer perform this.. I think due to the number of babies being born and trying to share the work load of busy offices.
  • We were told that it would be done the day after he was born at the hospital. I asked my OB who we get to do the circumcision, if she did it or if his pediatrician needed to, and she said pediatrician's cannot do it as they are not able to perform surgeries which is why your OB is supposed to be the one doing it.

this for us too. DS was done about 36 hours after birth by my OB while still in the hospital.

  • Another reason could be whether or not you choose to have a vitamin K shot having a midwife tends to give you more options in your birth plan. The vitamin K shot is because infants aren't born with normal blood clotting abilities. That is not in place for about 8 days also a reason for the 8day wait for circumcision biblically speaking. After 8 days, clotting is naturally accomplished. 2 weeks would give plenty of time! Just a more scientific reason.
  • I kow that in my area the local hospital doesn't perfom an circ's and you need to see your pedi later. The hospital I'm delivering at does circumcisions. So I can go it in the hospital, or at DS's 2 weeks appointment with my pedi. Depending on how the hospital does it I may just do it there. My pedi is pricey.

  • I doubt your midwife will perform the circumcision; they'll probably perform it in the office, but it will be done by someone qualified to perform it.

I know several people who have opted to wait 2 weeks and have their pedi/uro perform the procedure. A friend of mine just did this, actually, when her son was 2 weeks old. They didn't have a single problem! :)

  • We're Jewish, so will have the procedure done at home by a urologist or Mohel at 8 days.

  • Our pedi does it in their office a week or two after baby is born.

I'm messianic Jewish so we would wait 8 days as well, if we were having a boy.

this, I don't think I would be comfortable with someone doing it that isn't a surgeon.

  • I kept my son whole and I am so glad I did! I never gave it much thought until my husband said he would not let that happen to any son of ours. I have done much research since his birth 9 months ago and couldn't be happier with our decision. It is so easy to care for-never retract- just clean like a finger from base to tip. I never had to worry about urine and feces around an unnecessary wound and no trauma for my son. A win-win!! Maybe watch a video of the procedure and really think about your son having that done.
  • The best thing about having the Internet these days is you can factcheck all information. Babies in America now are being circumcised less and less thanks to myth debunking and the widespread of information. People are, in general, less likely to be fooled these days.
I would seriously consider looking up all the information I could about the functions of the foreskin before having this important and healthy part of my son's anatomy amputated if not medically necessary. It's almost NEVER medically necessary
I have three sons. The oldest is six years, the middle is three, and the youngest is three months. ALL of my sons are intact. They are all healthy and whole; they were born perfect, and they remain perfect.
Learn about the important functions of a healthy foreskin. Do not Rob your son of one of the most valuable gifts you could ever let him keep. It's there for a reason! You alone are responsible for protecting your child. Start now.
  • Have you ever considered not doing it? It is completely an unnecessary cosmetic procedure. The foreskin is there for a reason, many reasons actually. In infancy the foreskin is fused to the glans so that feces won't get inside the urethra. To do a circumcision on a baby, the foreskin has to be ripped apart from the glans before it is cut. It would be the same as ripping your fingernail away from your fingers. The foreskin also protects the glans from desensitizing. It's not natural for the glans to be permanently exposed.
  • Thanks for all of the feedback :)

We have so much to consider.

These comments irk me. Just because someone has decided that it is best for their child to be circumcised does not mean their child is no longer perfect. Sure, some people chose not to have it done, but to say that a child is imperfect because of the surgery is NOT ok with me. What about those men that have it done later in life because of a medical condition or preference? Are they deemed "imperfect" then, too? What about the woman who has her ears pierced, a breast implant or reduction, etc. Are they imperfect as well? What about those born with an extra toe or finger? (I have a friend who's child has 6 functioning fingers on each hand and 6 functioning toes on each foot) What about those born with a heart defect?

Realize that your "perfect" scenario can be very demeaning. Think about it.
