Cloth Diapering

Liners, Sprayer, or ? Share experiences please

I think my LO is finally getting to the stage where I need to do something different than just throw the dirties in the wash. Her poops are just too heavy IMO. What is everyone's experiences with liners? Or spraying off into toilet? Or some other option? I know lots of it is up to personal preference, but I'd still like to know.

I'm most interested in liners, because they seem easiest. But at the same time...I'd be "wasting" so many since she only has a poop every 2 days or so. Thoughts?

I don't really like the idea of a sprayer because how do you keep the soaking wet dirty diaper from dripping all over the bathroom after it's been sprayed? I guess you could just keep the wet bag in the bathroom...but that wouldn't work for my setup because we are living at my dad's house temporarily and the bathroom near LOs bedroom is my dad's bathroom. I couldn't keep the diaper bag in there.

  • We went with liners. I thought of using a sprayer but since we send him to dc we would also have to use liners. Some people buy the sturdier liners and wash them and reuse them (grovia, imse vimse). I am on several baby websites that offer discounts (babysteals, ecobaby etc) and buy them when they are on sale.

  • We can't have a sprayer with our toilet so I just use a hard plastic spatula and scrape it off into the toilet. It's not as bad as it sounds, I promise.

I don't like to use liners on a regular basis because she's so squirmy during diaper changes now I'm lucky to just get the diaper on.

I tried the spatula thing a few days ago...and the poop just stuck to the spatula and I had to wipe it several times to remove it. It was kind of gross to me...but maybe I didn't do it right?

I splash it around in the toilet and let the water run over it when I flush. If it's really stubborn and won't come off I just leave it soaking in the toilet for awhile.

Great idea...do you know of any sites that have them on special now?

  • Just be careful with the liners.  I didn't opt for this because there were several review that said they did not breakdown and caused issues in their plumbing.

I use a sprayer.  I keep my wetbag next to the toilet in a plastic garbage can from target.  I just turn on the sprayer (mine has a shutoff valve), unzip the bag and lift the lid to the toilet.  I spray my wipes first, then I separate my pockets and spray down the covers.

  • Grovia is on diapers.com for $10 for 200. I am hoping that after Thanksgiving they will go on sale too at other stores. Also I don't usually flush the liners just in case they cause problems with our septic.

  • I tried liners first and hated them.  They always bunched, the didn't catch all the poop so I still had to deal with clean up, and I after reading many reviews I worried they'd clog our toilet (didn't happen, but I worried about it).  It just became more annoying to use them than not.

Then I got a sprayer and loved it.  I still use it now.  Even though DD generally has ploppable poop, when she's teething she has super messy poop that I would not be able to get off without a sprayer.

  • Thanks everyone for your input, really helpful!

What about the fleece reusable liners? Any thoughts on those?

  • Since you asked, my two thoughts: The sprayer is 2000% worth it's weight in gold.

I've tried them all.  Liners (both disposable and fleece washable), spatula, swish and scrub (yes it is as gross as it sounds), and sprayer.  I even had to buy two different sprayers to get mine connected to my plumbing right, but it was worth every single penny.  Here is my low down:

Disposable Liners - great concept but didn't keep all of the poop on the liner plus our toilet started backing up from washing them.  We have known roots growing into our sewer lines but our landlord doesn't want to fix them.  Plus, like I said, I still had to rinse/swish the diaper to get the poop off that got onto the diaper.

Fleece Liners - same issue as above but no plumbing issue.  However, I found that the fleece liner did not have as much weight in the toilet so the swish and flush method was harder and there was less bulk to scrap with a scraper. Oh and just as a PP said, DD hates diaper changes so adding an extra step of putting the liner in was not happening for us.  So, that ended as quickly as I started.

Spatula - once DD got mobile and started sneaking into the bathroom her #1 goal was to find the spatula where I had hidden it.  Yes, very gross.  Then the spatula method was not easy and I ended up elbows into the toilet cleaning the diapers still, so why?

Swish and scrub- yes, again as bad as it sounds and I was elbows into the toilet cleaning these diapers.  It was just exhausting and plain gross when there were much better/easier alternatives.

The sprayer is awesome.  I've heard it said that it just "lasers the poop right off" and they are so right.  I waited almost 14mo before we got our sprayer and I wish I had bought one in the beginning.  It took me a whole week to get mine installed, I was tearing my hair out.  I had to combine a Lowe's bidet kit with the Flo diaper sprayer to hook ours up, and I almost called a plumber to do it.  And you know what I would DO IT OVER AGAIN in a heart beat!  My recommendation on the sprayer, buy one that connects to the toilet tank, not to your inlet valve, since you inlet valve can be all sorts of crazy sizes.  The toilet tank connection is much more standard.

Oh, and for all those "ploppable" poop hopes, dashed, DD has a ploppable poop maybe only once or twice a week and it is always when DH is home with her.

  • Here's how we use our sprayer:

I take the diaper, bag, and spray bottle of bac out into the bathroom once DD is changed.

Unzip bag, turn on the sprayer, then put one of those giant plastic paint buckets that we cut the bottom out of into the toilet to create a tunnel to spray into.  That keeps poop and water from getting everywhere.  We just keep the bucket right by the toilet (sounds like that wouldn't work for you with your current bathroom situation).

Then I spritz it with bac out and drop it in the bag.  It seems like a laborious process but considering how infrequently she has a soft enough stool that needs sprayed, it's not so bad.

  • Love having/using both! I wouldn't CD w/o a sprayer though!

Our pail is in the bathroom but I usually ring the diapers out over the toilet after I spray them so they're not sopping wet in the pail.
