I had one that I could use in the micorwave but you can boil them as well. This time around, I am going as cheap as possible and I will be boiling mine.
We never got one with DS. We just boiled the nipples (we used plastic bottles, so when I tried to boil one it melted, lol) periodically. The rest of the parts we washed in our dishwasher.
For what it's worth, I went to a breastfeeding class a couple of weeks ago and the teacher said that if you're bottle feeding, sterilization (machine or microwave) is important, but if you're breast feeding that there's no need to sterilize - dishwasher clean is sufficient - as the baby gets all of your antibodies through your breastmilk.
Without a dishwasher, I probably would get one. We got one as a gift and used it every once in a while, though we had a dishwasher too. I would hate to boil them every time.
I have bottle fed 2 kids and only sterilized the bottles with the 1st use- other than that I just clean them by hand with hot water, dish soap and a bottle brush. I actually found trying to wash them in the dishwasher to be pointless- I've tried it with 2 different dishwashers and neither gets bottles clean enough for my liking. I've never seen the point of sterilizing beyond the first use and my pedi agrees (with the exception of a situation of thrush or something). We just use a pot of hot water for sterilizing the 1st time.
This. I spoke to friends who have kids already and they said a bottle sterilizer is fine, bu boiling is the way to go : it's simple, easy and cheap. I'm going to boil mine.
