Mattress for graco pack n play?

Hi all - DH and I decided that the crib was going to be too large for both the babies and our bedroom.  So we moved it into the nursery with the other matching crib and decided to place our new graco elefanta pack n play in our master bedroom for the time being.  Since I probably will be having a c section (bc of IUGR in one baby) the height of the pnp is actually better for me anyway. I figured they can co-sleep in there (on the main pad, not the bassinet) for the time being.

However does anyone know if BRU or another store sells a better mattress/pad for the pnp than the original? It just doesn't seem comfortable.  Also does anyone have any experience co-sleeping in a pnp just for the first couple months? I really don't feel like purchasing a bassinet for that short of a time period when the pnp seems like a good option.  I figure they're swaddled anyway....

last question - could I take the changing table off temporarily and put one twin in the bassinet and the other on the regular mattress area? I just don't know what is safe....

opinions or advice greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Mattress for graco pack n play?

  • We used a pnp shared for 4 months. We used the bassinet for maybe a month and a half? We used the regular pad and they were fine. We still use it for travel and if one fights sleep/nap.

  • Just for terminology, so I know we're on the same page, the little sleep thing that attaches to the top is a "Newborn Napper." The regular mattress placed in the higher position is the bassinet.

We started out putting both babies in the bassinet of the pack and play.  I think it would have been OK, but the boys had mild reflux and didn't sleep well lying flat.  We ended up with them in bouncy chairs for a few months.

If sleeping flat works for them, I think they would do OK in the bassinet together.  The mattress has never been a problem for us - remember, soft is bad for babies - and my boys still sleep in pack-n-plays for travel and do fine.

  • Right - sorry for the confusion. I guess what I mean is this: we have both a changing table and napper on top of the mattress thing. I was thinking of definitely taking the changing part off for now. Possibly the napper too - or I could have one sleep in the napper, and the other on the mattress. Or is that weird because they'd be on different levels? Haha I guess I am just clueless. But you're right about the mattress part - I guess soft is bad, so a sheet would be fine. I'm just trying to figure out how to sleep them at night in the pack n play....

  • We used two PnPs, I wasn't comfortable with the suffocation risk even though they were swaddled. They each slept in their cozy sleeper then moved to the bassinet. A different mattress is not recommended by Graco due to increased suffocation/SIDS risk and my boys found it comfy enough. Remember, babies should be sleeping on firm mattresses anyways. If you choose to cosleep them then remove both the napper and the changing table per Graco's manual. It's a suffocation risk to have one in the napper and one in the bassinet.

ETA: I said "suffocation risk" a lot, sorry. I would suggest reading your pnp's manual and determining what YOU are comfortable with.

No no no!  Don't put them on two different levels.  What if it collapsed?  You actually couldn't anyways, because it only comes with one mattress, that you will either use on the bottom, or as the napper.

  • I found a quilted sheet that fits the pack and play and it made it a little more comfortable (not a huge difference though). I think it was on Amazon. You could probably cut out a piece of egg crate foam and stuff it under the sheet, but it will increase the SIDS risk.

As for who is going to sleep where, it's so hard to know ahead of time what will work. I wouldn't worry about it too much yet. You'll probably end up making adjustments as you go.

We found that all of our babies slept better in upright positions. Things like bouncy chairs, rock'n'plays and swings always worked the best. (Even though we had co-sleepers, pack'n'plays and cribs around too).

PLEASE, please, please, please, PLEASE don't use an egg crate. PLEASE. It's so dangerous. Crib mattresses are supposed to be firm, with just a regular sheet.

  • Yes, BRU does sell a mattress for the PNP.  I have one and so does my sister and my mom (for when the kids sleep at her house).  I have found that most of my kids slept better, as they got older, in the PNP with the mattress b/c it was much more comfortable than the hard bottom that the PNP comes with.

  • My boys slept in the PNP together for the first couple of months. They both slept on the mattress that came with the PNP, i never used the changing table or napper that came with mine. After a few months, they hated sleeping in the PNP so I moved them to their crib. I finally bought a slightly padded, quilted sheet for the PNP which it makes it a little more comfortable when we travel. I found the sheet at BRU I think it's made by Carter's.
  • My twins are 11 weeks now and still cosleep in the pack n play with bassinett insert. I went to buy buy baby yesterday and they do sell a mattress to fit ours. It was called a "travel crib mattress" and it was in the mattress/crib/changing table section. 45.

    Good luck!

  • I still use the changer when I need to change diapers downstairs. The pnp I got (safety 1st) has the changer on the edge of the pnp so it doesn't hang over the sleeping area.

  • We have used and still use the MamaDoo Kids mattress topper to add extra comfort and support. It has the perfect firmness and folds in 3 (very portable!). We love it! Good luck!
