who uses portable car dvd players? are they worth it?

So my daughter is now one year old (barely) and I am noticing she is bored more often than not in the car. One thing she LOVES is sesame street and so I was thinking about getting a portable dvd car player thingy but I was wondering if anyone recomends them. I personally get carsick doing anything but driving in the car so I definitly dont want her dizzy.....thoughts? or another toy people use in their cars? I am a first time momma so have no idea :)

Re: who uses portable car dvd players? are they worth it?

  • My personal opinion, I really dislike DVD's in the car.
How do you know you LO is bored? I would just try to add more toys or put something on the window to grab their attention. A TV is something you will never be able to take out once you put it in, and that they may need that TV every time they are in a car.

  • We have a built in DVD player and the only time the kids are allowed to use it is on long trips 2+ hours.  It is good for kids to figure out how not to be bored on their own.

  • We don't use one currently, but are probably going to get one for longer car trips.  A HATES riding in the car, and screams 86% of every trip. So for the trips of and hour +, I'm sure we will use it..for our sanity.

If she just seems bored, maybe make a bag "car only" fun toys?

  • Lo is still rear facing so I couldn't really do a car DVD player. She likes to hold her baby dolls and I hook toys to her car seat with the links. I also bought a car seat toy box that attaches to the car so it won't get flung around.

  • We just a headrest one but I honestly have no idea the brand.

DS is horrible horrible horrible in the car so I will take whateve works!! Hand him a toy and its most likely getting thrown. He doesn't watch TV at home so I have no issue with him watching it in the car. He also spends less than 10 minutes in the car on our average day.

  • thanks everyone for the suggestions!!
  • We have them, but only let the boys watch anything in there on long trips.  My family lives 2.5 hrs away, so that is pretty much the only time they are allowed to watch anything in the car. I just think its unnecessary otherwise.  That said, it is more for Jack (3) than it is for Luke.  Up until this last trip, Luke didnt every watch it, he just pretty much screamed the whole way.  He hates the car.

  • I am of the mindset that they're not necessary for every day drives, but might help with long car trips. We are driving 3.5 hours away for Thanksgiving, so I am probably going to order a DVD player in the next day or two. I am looking at this one on Amazon and I'm finding that most of the less expensive DVD players have crummy reviews... but I also don't want to pay a fortune. Can't tell you how it will work out since I haven't tried it yet! Also, I was hoping I could put it on the front of a headrest since G is still rear facing, I'm not even sure if that will work either...

I also considered getting a little magnetic doodle thing for the car too, but I don't think it would keep his attention very long right now.

I want someone to talk to me about how they did a cross country trip with their kids and no DVD player.....

    ::crickets::

I remember doing this when I was a kid (before movie watching in the car was even an option).  We drove from MN to TX Every. Single. Year. to visit family.  Sometimes we went twice in a year.  My brother, sister, and I read a lot of books, made up a lot of car games, and probably drove my mom nuts.  Ha!

Yup, we did 2 day car trips when I was a kid.  My mom had a bag of activities/toys for us, we had travel games, I read (my brother got carsick), tapes that we sang along to, and we played games like I Spy and "betting" on what colour car was most popular on the road.  I can't remember what we did before we were old enough to play those games, though.

  • Everytime I get into the car with my friend, her son screams "Elmo, Elmo" and we are stuck listening to Sesame Street DVDs.  I am definitely not getting a DVD player in my new car.  I have a few dolls in the car and Li loves the mirror on the head rest.

  • We don't have one. We use the iPad but only for long drives. Like we did 18 hours this week so she got to have the iPad for movies.

Your friend did it wrong. You have to buy the portable ones that strap on to the headrest. That way, all of the DVD sound is in the backseat and you can have the radio on up front. I also don't allow annoying voice cartoons into the car with me (or to be watched at home). I would happily listen to the Elton John or Julie Andrews episodes of The Muppets on repeat.

My family lives 6.5 hours from us, my ILs live 8.5 hours from us. Until you've driven 6+ hours with your child screaming the entire time, I'd advise not sounding off about the debil DVD players. (this paragraph was not directed towards Liz)

We have taken C on two long car trips.  The first was to North Dakota when he was 8 months, 1,300 miles.  The second was to Las Vegas when he was 10 months, 1,200 miles.  Both without a DVD player.  He played with his toys and looked out the window.  I agree with pp, once you put it in, you can't take it out.  I'm not ruling it out for the future, but I'm leaning heavily against it.

  • I don't and don't plan on getting one in the near future. DS is pretty good in the car though. I'm sure he's a little bored sometimes, but we aren't ever in the car for an extended period of time. He can survive with looking out the window or playing with toys. If he was a screamer in the car though I would probably end up getting one. Maybe not for a quick run to the store, but anything longer I would have no problem using it. I wouldn't like it but it's much preferable to having a miserable LO and a distracted driver. I also will probably consider getting one in the future if we end up going on any car trips longer than a few hours.
  • I'm trying to avoid car tv for as long as possible. I've already seen the beast that is the smartphone addiction.

This is me, too.  Lily is pretty good for long car rides luckily.  There have been a couple of times where she's screamed a lot (of course those have been the times when I was making the trip without DH) and it is extremely distracting to me as the driver and not fair to her to be so miserable.  When it becomes a matter of safety, I think it's great that we now have the technology to provide a solution.  If it's just because your kid occasionally whines a little or you're using it for every 5 minute ride in the car, I think that there have to be better solutions.  But everyone has to figure out what works for them and their child(ren).

  • I have no planes to get one. Is it cliche to say that I somehow survived childhood without one (and my parents did too) and we were too poor to fly anywhere back then so nothing but long a$$ car trips for us. My parents drove across country from FL to AZ when I was 18 months and we all survived.

    Just you wait.

Hour 26 of your car trip or hour 5 of a cross country plane ride with your 16 month old you will be begging for Elmo.

A portable one for the plane, I am absolutely getting one of those. I'm not getting the one built into the car.

That reminds me, I should probably send dh to best buy for it this weekend before we go to Austin in December.

  • Cross country trips you need one if you have kidS, otherwise they entertain themselves by fighting.

I take that back you need one for each kid.
