Natural Birth

Hospital Water Birth!

I switched care providers in my 26th week. I was not building any rapport with my obgyn that saw me since my first appointment. She kept the meetings to about 2 minutes and was very matter-of-fact about interventions whenever I asked about policies and procedures. She also exclusively delivered at a hospital with a 42% C/S rate. --of course it's the newest, most beautiful hospital with valet parking and parking garages, starbucks in the L&D area, etc. All my friends delivered there (2/3 ended with csections). I saw the writing on the wall and got out!

I learned from my new midwife today that the hospital they deliver at has 3 birthing tubs. I asked, "birthing tubs, not just labor tubs?" Nope--full blown, catch your baby and bring her to your chest while in a warm bath birthing tubs!

I'm so excited. I'm a FTM and could not think of a better situation that makes me and MH feel secure. Our baby will most likely be born in calm waters. Big Smile

  • That's awesome! I am not aware of any places in my town that have "birth" tubs, only "labor" tubs.

  • Awesome. Wish that was an option but I hear they are not legal unless you're having a home birth here

Hmm...I'm in Texas (Fort Worth). Harris Medical downtown actually built a third, "better" tub because my midwife group brought such great responses. It's nice to hear how much its being embraced.

Thanks yall! I'm mentally and physically preparing for her birth. We've got 8-10 weeks left!

  • I have a MW and I am a STM. With my first pregnancy I had a water birth in a hospital and loved it! I was given Nubane but was not allowed any other medications. I walked the halls until I was about 7cm and then I was told I could get in the shower. I labored in the shower for an hour and was at 9cm. I could have gotten in the tub sooner, but I was very comfortable in the shower. I labored to 10cm in the tub and delivered in the tub.

The only thing I found scary was that Ds's shoulders got stuck and I found it very hard to hold on. My MW was literally pulling me up out of the water with every pull of the baby's head. I tore really bad and still have issues where my scar didn't heal very well. I can't imagine how this would have been if I was on a bed and trying to push his shoulders out without the help of the water. I plan on another water birth this time around with another MW in the same practice.

  • Congrats! I am doing a hospital water birth as well. Don't you just love when the puzzle pieces fit together :)
