Toddlers: 24 Months+

What type of "coat" do you put on your LO (boy)?

We don't want anything bulky because of car seat safety.

Looking for something to get my 3 year old through the winter that is light and warm.

Any ideas?

 THANKS :)

  • Finn has an LLBean fleece jacket I got on clearance when the closest outlet to us closed:  https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/61377?feat=507269-GN3&page=infants-and-toddlers-trail-model-fleece-hooded-jacket

I will probably wait for them to go on sale in the spring and buy another one for next winter.

In the past he's had Old Navy fleece jackets but the quality of LLBean is much better and it's definitely warmer.

  • I get DS's coats on consignment. Last year, he wore a fleece jacket in the car but had a thicker one for playing outside. This year, he has a thin, fleece mix coat that seems fairly warm. I found an LL Bean 3 in 1 at Savers for $7. He'll use that when outside when it is very cold.

  • I use a fleece coat by timberland I got at a consignment store for the car. It is a thicker fleece and keeps him really warm without being too thick for the carseat. I also get a hooded bubble coat for playing outside. On really cold days, I buckle the kids into their carseat then put a coat on them backwards for extra warmth.

  • We use the Target 3 in 1 and he wears the inner layer in the car and I send the outer layer to daycare for when they play outside.

  • My son wears a leather bomber right now but we have a warmer/waterproof kind from Columbia that I got at Nordstrom Rack on sale for when it is colder and for snow.

One strategy I use in the car that I learned on here somewhere is to unzip the coat and pull the sides through the straps so that after the shoulders, the seatbelt is still up against LO's clothes and you can tighten it more. Of course the shoulder part is still semi-bulky but much less so than with a whole coat under there. But, if you're just running in & out of places, a good fleece is great to have around also. I used to use the CP 3 in one coats in various ways but found that the outside shell runs huge and I don't shop there much b/c their clothes all tend to be too big on my kids.

  • We have a North Face jacket that we got at the outlet store 2 years ago.  It's NOT one of those huge puffy coats, yet it is very warm.  We unzip it in the car so the straps are against his chest.

  • I always do fleece...I think it is your best bet.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • We also do a 3-in-1 (current one is from Children's Place) and he wears the inner/fleece part in the car.
  • It's pretty bulky, but we usually take it off in the car and warm the car for him instead... That said, I'm in LA, so it isn't really all that cold!

  • We have the landsend Weatherly jacket. It's a heavy fleece on the inside and thinsulate filling.  It's very thin, but warm.

  • We got the North Face todder nuptse jacket and it's fantastic.  It's a puffer coat and very warm, but not hugely puffy.
