Reading to baby

I've always tried to read to her but she does't seem interested still. I was reading to her before bed for awhile but she'd be so ready for bed after a bath that she would fidgit and wouldn't sit still and sometimes fuss at us until she was in bed. Then I tried to make it a point to read to her a couples times just throughout the day but she just trys to grab the book and eat it. If I sit her on the floor between my legs with her facing the book I will hold it up so she can't grab it but then she gets frustrated and will arch and throw herself back. Akk! So I've stopped again. Anyone else experoence the same issue? My baby won't just lay in my arms as I read to her. How/when do you read to your baby? DO they actually relax as you read to them?

Re: Reading to baby

  • I read to DS before both of his naps.  It has become part of his naptime routine.  I sit with him in the glider and give him his teddy bear and a small board book to hold (otherwise he grabs at the book I'm reading).  He does like story time - he looks at the pictures and it helps settle him down before his naps.

  • My son loves reading books- actually too much. He gets so wound up kicking his legs and moving his arms that we can't do it before bed. His teacher at day care started reading to him laying on the ground and that's what seems to work best with him. That way I'm able to keep the book far enough out of reach that he can't grab it or try and bite it. Maybe try that. It might just be the age. I've felt like it was easier a few months ago to get through a book- now that my son can roll and is trying to crawl he has about a 2 second attention span and loses interest really quickly.

  • DD1 wouldn't sit still for books until well after 2 years old.  She always loved looking at books- turning pages and actually focusing on them from 10 months or so.  She has always been extremely squirmy and wiggly.  I don't think we got out first hug until 2.5 yrs and I know she didn't fall asleep in my arms after 6 weeks old unless she was seriously ill.  I would read to her while she played with toys.  Eventually she started to love being read to, and was reading phonetically shorted after she turned 4.  I believe it's important to teach them to love books.  At this level, that love will often be oral- and that's ok! IMO don't try to make baby sit still or look at the pages, and don't discourage baby from turning pages backward and forward.  Let LO guide the experience.

  • He will sit still but I usually give him another book to look at or nom on sometimes a small quiet toy. We read at different points of the day.

LOL my baby NEVER relaxes in my arms unless its after her bedtime feed. So yes, she is always hitting the book, grabbing at it etc. Also VERY fidgety. She is a hyper baby. In fact, we joined a new gym tonight and I looked at the monitor they had and saw one of the workers trying to rock her in her arms-I thought, OH NO-she will bawl and loose it. Sure enough 5 min later they had her in swing, then jumper.

My LO doesnt like feeling restrained, so she isnt one to sit still with books. She does LOVE books though and has her favorites, but likes to hit them etc as I read :)

  • DD loves books and being read to. But now that she is older, she doesn't sit still like she used to. She used to sit through 2-3 books.

She sometimes reads with Daddy while I'm getting the bath ready. Sometimes just randomly throughout the day if she needs to chill out. Unless it is a board book, she gets a teething ring or something small to keep her hands busy. If it is a board book, we let her help turn the pages, etc.

It doesn't always relax her but it does sometimes. It is good for all kids, babies included, to have time each day to just sit and be quiet. Relax without sleeping. We try to make book reading be that time.
