Clothes for a January baby?

I live in Philadelphia and I am trying to outfit my LO when s/he arrives in January.

What sizes are most important? Newborn, 0-3, 3-6?

How many outfits should I get? Should they all be long-sleeved? What about pants? The temperature and time of year is throwing me off!

also, I wish to wash everything before the baby comes, so I don't think returning items is an option...

thank you!

  • If your LO is an average sized baby, she will probably spend about a month in NB sizing.  After that, all babies grow at different rates, so don't buy too far ahead.  The first few months you pretty much only need staples like footed pjs and long and short sleeved onesies for layering and pants.  You'll be doing a lot of diaper changes so simple, easily accessible layers are best.  Legwarmers like Baby Legs are great as well.  Your baby will also want to spend quite a bit of time being swaddled or carried next to you in carrier like Moby or Ergo, so that will help with warmth.  I did like fleece sleep and plays layered with a cotton onesie on cold days.

I would try to avoid taking newborns out in the cold for extended period of time, especially in the cold and flu season, but we liked our fleece bunting for short trips outside.

  • I would recommend lots of fleece sleep and plays.  I often dress LO in a sleep and play for the day.  Much easier to deal with than pants, socks, onesie, and shirt, IMO.  My LO was in NB sizes for three weeks, and is now about to outgrow 3 month sizes at 9 weeks old.

    BFP #1: 2/14/11. EDD: 10/20/11. Missed m/c discovered in April at 12 weeks, d&c. BFP #2: 12/27/11. EDD: 9/9/2012.
  • I would only wash maybe one newborn onzie as I've heard some babies never wear NB.  For my son, I bought 4 more newborn onzies, which he only ended up wearing a week....BUT I washed them so many times in that week b/c at that stage the diaper leaks so much.  Make sure you have the snap undershirts (Carters and Gerbers make them) as you may need to dress around the umbilical cord stump.  Also, the cotton baby stuff seem to shrink a lot. I ended up putting them in the dryer for 10 min and hang drying after that.  I also dressed him in 3 months, eventhough they were big in the begining and layered a snap undershirt and pants under it (rolling the pants so it didn't touch and irritate the umbilical cord stump). Make sure you have lots of socks.  Sleepsacks are also good in the house (fyi..you can often find them in TJmaxx & Marshalls for a lot cheaper than the baby stores).  My son hated swadding, so we used them at night. Carters was the only brand I found with long sleeve ones adn they make them in 0-9 months, so they are prob too big for a newborn, but in a month or 2 they might be used.

My son was born in May and I am now expecting in Jan.  The baby hats we had didn't stay on very well (stuff like the carters ones that come in a 3 pack or that come w/pj's- very light).  I have been reading up on winter hats and it seems like the bundle me hat in 0-3 months is good option, although some reviews say its very small.
