Parenting after a Loss

Sled advice?

Hi!  My MIL wants to get DD a sled for xmas - one of the huge LL Bean ones w/the wood sides, pad etc.  My concern is that it's such an expensive gift and I don't know how long this type of sled is used.  Seems like she would only use it maybe this season and next (she is 17 mo now), but after that she'll want the kind that can go down a hill, not get pulled around.  Then it will just hang around in the cellar collecting dust...

Anyone have experience with these sleds - how long did your kids use them?

Hope you are all doing well!

Re: Sled advice?

  • I haven't a clue, but I am glomming on to see any responses.  G will only be 14 months in December but the sled thing is a constant topic of conversation.

And BTW, hello there Spincat.  :)

  • Not sure how long they could last, but we've used ours with about 40lbs loaded on top. Funny enough we originally bought it for our husky to sled train him as a puppy. We put weights on there and it was fine up to 40ish lbs. so maybe that helps?

ETA: are they expensive there? Ours has a sleeping bag thing, pad, and is wooden with wooden sides and was 30 dollars new. I probably wouldn't get it if it was megaexpensive.

The one she is looking at is around $150!  Personally I think that $ could go a lot further spread over multiple developmental toys.  I don't think my daughter will care if she has the "cadillac" of sleds.  Any old sled I would think would do...But I hate to be a killjoy...

Be a "killjoy"!! Ask MIL to get the $30 one and then put the other $120 towards other items of use!  Nothing is worse than wasting money on something for no reason.. just explain it to her like you did us.. she will probably only get 2 seasons of use out of it, and she is too young to have a "preference" for the top brand.. and that the extra money saved could be used towards other things that would greatly enhance her development :)
