Christmas Photo or Handmade Gifts

Would love to hear ideas from anyone planning on giving grandparents a creative Christmas gift that involves photos (could be a past gift too) or is handmade.  We have done a photo book, prints, and butterfly footprint on a trivet.  Our families already have too much stuff and love anything with DD photo or made by her.  I am searching pinterest but wanted to ask here too.

  • I highly recommend a calendar.  I know you can do them at Office Max, etc.  However, if you have any computer knowledge you can do them yourselves at home for cheap using Publisher.  I do the calendar command for the 12 months.  You could add text for special dates but do not have to.  Then create another file for pics for each month.  You could do one for each month or a collage.  Then print on heavier paper front to back.  The biggest expense is purchasing a tool for doing the binding.  The spines are pretty cheap.  I wonder if you could do it yourself and take into a store to do the binding.

  • Ditto to the calendar! I make one for my mom every year. It's her favorite gift!

I plan on making a foot print plate for both grandmas this year. You pick a white plate from the dollar store, dip your child's foot in paint, make a print, and then write, "MistleTOES" on it. You then bake it in the oven, which supposedly seals it. I found it on Pintrest, so I'm sure you can search for it easily.

  • Another yes for the calendar! I made a desk and wall one on shutterfly last year with some coupons they were sending around. They were a big hit. I tried to use seasonal pictures to go with each month, but if I didn't have anything I just put a pic of LO with the recipient or whatever.

I'm definitely making more this year!

  • We did a photo book and a photo calendar from Shutterfly last year.  We'll probably do the same again this year.

  • I did calendars last year on shutterfly. I think I'm going to make them the week after next and wait to buy them until there is a good discount.

This year we will do another calendar and a reindeer foot plate at a ceramic painting place. We did the first last week and they came out great!

  • For all the calendar folks, has anyone gotten one from Costco?  Looks like they are $9.99 vs the $21.99+ at Shutterfly.

  • Where do you see one on the Costco site for $10?  The only one I am seeing is 21.

  • I just made hand print ornaments this weekend. They are SUPER inexpensive to make and they turned out really cute. I made them with salt dough (which is basically just flour, salt, and water) and then just baked them for 3 hours. I'm just finishing them off with a coat of acrylic paint. The recipe I used made 3 of them plus there was some dough left over.

Here is a link with directions if you're interested (originally found it on pinterest):
