Anybody know about sewing machines?

I'd like to get one and don't even know where to start. My MIL has been taking in a lot of Abby's clothes since she's so skinny and I'd like to just be able to do it myself. Help me get started picking out one!

Re: Anybody know about sewing machines?

  • I have a Bernina that I love. I think they are great machines for beginners because they are sturdy, and not prone to issues and random malfunctions, especially the more basic models. When i was taking apparel design in college, all the instruction machines in the sewing lab were Berninas. They are not cheap though. You might get lucky on CL, or check to see if there's a sewing machine store in your area to see if they sell refurbished ones.

Singers are good machines too, I haven't used one recently, but I know they are affordable.

  • I don't know a single thing about sewing machines, but I just got one and I'm trying to teach myself basic things like hemming. I got mine from Costco for about $170 (brand name: Brother). It's pretty user friendly and I like it so far. Also, Pinterest has a bunch of sewing tutorial websites. GL!

  • I got a Brother one from a yard sale for $40. Works perfect. If I didn't get this one I would have gotten a Brother one from Walmart at the $100 price point. Joann's Fabric also has nice sales and coupons to use. You could buy there too.

  • Don't know anything about the different brands but you definitely don't need to spend a lot of money if you just want a good, basic machine. I have a Janome that I bought for 100 ten years ago and I use it regularly for making L's clothes and quilting. It doesn't even have a foot pedal, just a button, and I actually prefer this because I can set it up on the floor when I need to fix something in a rush.

This is the one that made me think about getting one .... it's actually on sale with this set of coupons that started this past Wednesday, so it's $130 now. I don't know if you can return yours and buy another one at this discounted price. ;o)

I recently purchased a Brother for about $140 on Amazon ( I wonder if it's similar).  I do a fair amount of sewing and I really like this one!! My friend has the same one and she is a quilter (new to quilting, but has made several) and loves it!

This is the one I have...it is very easy to use.

  • I own a basic Janome it is great and it was about three hundred dollars.  I have owned mine for about 14 years and I have only had to get it fixed once, which cost $40.00.  My sister has my moms old viking machine from the 70's and that thing rocks but doesn't  have all the bells and whistles.  My Mom owns a Husqvarna and it is amazing, but super pricey.(someday maybe I'll get one)

  • Thanks girls! I think from the sounds of it, this Brother one at Costco might be just fine for what I want. I wasn't sure about the brand, so all I know Brother for is printers, but since a few of you have Brother sewing machines, I think I'll just go with this one.

  • Mine is a White. My Grandmother & Mother got it for me for christmas a few years ago. I like that it's basic, and doesn't have a lot for me to screw it up. Once I messed with the tension settings and couldn't get the foot to move so had to have my gram come fix it for me, but other than that it has been perfect.  I can't imagine it was much over $100.  My Gram said she started sewing on a white, and loved hers. She's a master quilter now so has a big quilting machine & a serger and a big singer machine with lots of bells and whistles. :)

That's a good point! Whatever you do, don't mess with the tension switch. It's not really necessary and a PITA to fix.

Sewing is a great stress release! Enjoy!
