Postpartum Depression

which doctor do I see?

I think i'm out of the PPD zone since my "baby" is 13mo, but I have had anxiety/depression feelings for a long time but have never went to the doctor to take care of myself.  I'm getting to the point where I need help, but i'm confused as to which doctor to go to.  I haven't been to my OB since my 6 week check up, and i never really see a PCP (I do have one, but am not sick often).  Should I make an appt with OB or PCP? or a therapist?? I'm really clueless. haha
Thanks for the opinions/guidance!

Re: which doctor do I see?

  • They typically say PPD can happen w/in the first year PP.  You are very close to that one year time period, plus you probably have had it but haven't spoke up about it...so it very well still could be PPD or PPA.  Contact your OB and they can speak to you or start you on meds.  They will also typically refer you to a therapist.  From my personal experience...the only people that really know about psych meds are psyciatrists!  They are the professionals...it is kinda like you wouldn't go to your family dr to have your baby, so why go to a normal dr for a mental illness.  I see a therapist and a "shrink" and take meds which my "shrink" has prescribed.  The combo of the 2 have helped me TONS!  My OB still calls and checks up on me...he is amazing.

Good luck with everything...making the phone call, going to your first appointments and taking meds for the first time can be tough.  Things will get better though!

PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • If you haven't been since 6 weeks, are you due for your annual soon?  I talked to my ob about it at my annual and she helped me.  They could at least direct you where to go from there if they can't help, and you'd possibly knock out two things you need to take care of at once.  I did it that way because I don't have to pay for routine checkups but still haven't met our deductible for other visits so it was a lower cost option to start with.  I figured she could at least direct me to who could help if she hadn't.
