DH is going to a conference in Las Vegas in March. We are thinking about making it a week long trip. I like Vegas but not the idea of a smokey casino with DS. So we thought perhaps a trip to LA/San Diego for a week and then DH could go to his conference and DH and I would go home.
I have enough miles for two RT tickets from Boston, nonstop. I also have a halfbrother and halfsister more like cousins in Carlsbad and LA respectively. We may visit them but I don't want to burden them with our visit. Any recommendations on family things to do in those areas?
TIA!

OCT 2011 Moms BlogVegas is pretty family oriented these days also. Other than the places already mentioned, there's Legoland, The San Diego Zoo and just driving on PCH along the coast and stopping for lunch, sight-seeing.
I can certainly help more with San Diego, but there is plenty to do that's family friendly in both areas. LA is rather spread out though, so as Shediva alluded to, it helps to know where your family is. (The aquarium by her is supposed to be fantastic, I've been dying to go for years)
In San Diego we have lots of "animal" areas (Wild Animal Park, Zoo, LBB loves the Birch Aquarium, Sea World, Sea Life Aquarium at Legoland), and activities for little guys like Legoland and tons of Museums. LBB loved the Museum of Making Music when we went, and today we're going to the New Children's Museum. Balboa Park also has a train and carousel to intersperse with the museums.
It'll be a little cold for the beaches for sunbathing, but still fun to explore - the beaches here are SO different than the East Coast. It took me a little bit of time to get used to it. March is the perfect time for whale watching, and Cabrillo National Monument is great for that and running around room for little legs. And the Botanical Garden in Encinitas has a special children's area which is pretty cool.
And honestly, you couldn't pay me enough to go to Vegas in March. Been there, done that, and with March Madness it's a zoo. Madness doesn't even begin to describe it!
We took E to the LB Aquarium for her birthday and she loved it. DH works nearby so it's kind of our backyard.
I suggest having a car no matter what. I'm not a big OC fan but the beaches and dining can be great year round. In colder weather I recommend tide-pooling over sun bathing. PM me if you want suggestions for places.
When I visited my sister last time she was near marymount but I know she's since moved. I'll have to get an updated address for Xmas cards.
Blu do you know of flippn pizza or knockout pizza in San Diego? That's my half brothers pizza chain.
I confirmed she's not far from the airport - a road off of S Sepulveda Blvd.
I don't know of either of these!
I'll have to look into them though. My mom is a huge pizza fan so we often end up going out for pizza when she comes down for dinner.
