Food Allergy

There is hope guys.....

I just wanted to chime in and say "there is hope!!".  I remember at just shy of 12 months old, my oldest son was diagnosed with SEVERE allergies to a multitude of items including soy, ALL dairy, wheat, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts.  This was after he had anaphylaxis at his first b-day party---from a cake that I made which had pretty much ALL of that stuff in  it.

I thought my world was closing in as I had been breastfeeding and basically found out that I was poisoning my son (I never really realized that ALL of his issues were related to allergies).....and then didn't know where to begin in terms of feeding him "real" foods. BUT I set out to make it work becuase well....there was no other choice, right??  LOL.

It was a rocky start, but there are SO many great foods out there that are allergy friendly--which was great.  Now over 3 yrs later, he has begun growing out of so many of them!!  It's amazing.  For the first time I went to Whole Foods and didn't have to spend over $200 on just his stuff.....and could actually buy "fun" items.

I guess I just wanted to post this and say "hang in there"--because I KNOW first hand how sucky it feels to have the diagnosis as well as the day to day issues surrounding it.  If you need food ideas, feel free to visit the blog I started way back then to help other moms out with food ideas.  WWW.matthewsfood.blogspot.com.  It's in the siggy too.  But either way.....there is HOPE.  So many grow out of their allergies by the age of 5....and even if they don't....you'll be MUCH stronger at that point that it'll actually feel normal to you.  Even now the fact that he can have a regular saltine cracker is just bizarre to me.  But it's real.

  • Congratulations! I hold on to that hope that you speak of. DS just turned 2, so I know about spending a ton of money at Whole Foods for "his food". God bless you!

  • I'm so happy to hear that! My son Will has outgrown almost all of his food allergies too. He outgrew all of them and then a new one (cinnamon) popped up but it's SO much easier than when he was younger!
