Married ladies...

How were proposed to?

I am 2 glasses of wine in, and just got really annoyed with a cheesy jewelry store commercial with a corny proposal.  It makes me wonder if there are people out there that had the cheesy proposal.  Spill it!

Re: Married ladies...

  • I did not get the cheesy proposal. I will always secretly hold it against him.

We actually got engaged twice. The first time was after some crazy makeup sex and we were still nude. We went and bought a ring, but a couple months later I freaked out and gave it back to him because I wasn't ready. About a year later, I decided I was ready and started to drop hints. He did nothing. The hints got heavier and heavier and heavier... One night we were getting ready to go out and I was giving him a hard time that I had no jewelry to match my dress (hint hint). He confessed that he was really nervous to propose and didn't know what to do. I said I didn't want some big shenanigan, just me and him and the ring. 10 minutes later he proposed in our hallway while we were trying to leave. yeah buddy, that's not what I meant. At least take me out to dinner.

  • Dh proposed to me on Christmas morning. There was a huge box for me under the tree. Dh had me unwrap it last. I unwrapped one box and then there was a smaller box inside that one wrapped and then another and another. When I was unwrapping the ring box dh got down on one knee and he asked me to marry him. My older ds jumped on his back and wrapped his arms around dh's neck. Ds helped pick my ring out with dh. I also found out later that dh asked my mom's permission before proposing. I know it's all super cheesy, but it was perfect.

  • Me, one week after BFP: "I made an appointment for us at the Recorder's office Thursday at 10 AM.  You don't work untl noon, right?"

    Him: "Yep."

He had me at health insurance. <3

  • We knew we had to get married if I wanted to get permanent residency in less than five years. Since we knew we would get married eventually anyways, it was understood we would do it as soon as I arrived in Canada and he could get away from the job in the States.

However, he proposed in Germany anyways. We had just worked a festival tour for a band and were beat (well, I was more than him, his job is to take video of the show and behind the scenes. I worked 18 hour days on good days for three weeks straight).

I was laying in the bath tub when he came in and proposed. I said yes. We then had awesome sex in the hotel room and after that I had glorious sleep until dinner that night.

I would have loved a cheesy proposal, but it's just not him. However, I love him to pieces and more every day. Plus, it makes a good story that he waited until I was sleep deprived and too weak to say no (we usually leave out the permanent residency part).

  • I'm pretty sure mine was unplanned which made it all the more romantic, for me anyway. We had just met 4 months before and were on our first trip together. We were at a secluded beach in Malaysia and had just finished a big fancy dinner. I was drunk but he wasn't. We were sitting in the sand out behind the restaurant and looking at the waves and stars and suddenly he turns to me and says Why don't we get married? I told him to let me think about it because I thought 4 months was rushing it, but here we still are!

  • Dh and I had disscussed marriage and I told him he would have to officially ask me with a ring and that he should ask my fellow peace corps volunteers for tips. One day he showed up at my house and said "I got rings" and proceeded to pull out 2 silverlooking bands. He handed me one and put one on his finger. I don't think he ever actually asked.
  • Mine wasn't very romantic but he tried. He had planned to ask me on new years eve when the ball dropped. His plan didn't happen because he was having the stone from my moms ring incorporated into a new setting for me. My mom passed when I was 16 and he knew that I always wanted to use her stone as part of my ring. Anyway the jeweler couldn't get the ring done on time for new years eve, so he was going to wait and plan something else. They ended up calling him the next day and saying the ring was done, and he rushed to get it. We has plans to go out with friends for dinner and have everyone over our house after. I guess the ring was burning a hole in his pocket. On the way back from dinner he acted like we were having car trouble an pulled over in this pretty spot near our house by the bay. He asked me to come out and help him. I was cranky about it cause it was freezing and I know nothing about cars. When I got to the front of the car he was on one knee with the ring. Our friends came racing up in their cars and jumped out with cameras. I said yes, we posed for some pics, them we all went to our house to drink and play Rockband.
  • My story is partly just about the ring .... To make it short, we had found a ring that I feel in love with, but he told me that when he went back to buy it, it was sold and the last one the company had nationwide. I bought the story, it was very reasonable to have said that, and I literally cried over it. We continued to ring shop and I was just not into it, but did pick out another ring. Fast forward 2 months, we took a roadtrip up to Canada to go to a friend's wedding. We went a couple days early so we could travel around parts of Canada. Our first stop was Niagara Falls. We were walking along the walkway by the Falls and we stopped to take pictures. All of a sudden he was down on one knee proposing. He opened the ring box and there was the original ring that I had fallen in love with! I was so excited, but my natural instinct, I guess, when I saw that ring was "I hate you!" So I said "I hate you" before I said "yes." Whoops .... LOL. We thought it was funny though! I hope the spectators all thought so, too. :o)

  • He was going to do it on the pier when he returned from sea, but wanted to ask permission from my father first.  He did it on a trip my parents took to visit us.  He picked out the rings himself...I had no idea.  Last minute he found a football game with his favorite team the Packers playing the Red Skins here in DC.  We were living in Virginia Beach and drove the 4 hours.  I thought it was weird he asked me if his hoodie would fit in my bag..I was like carry your own hoodie.  He asked to grab the camera from my bag to take a picture and dropped the ring in without me seeing.  He asked for the camera again and I was irritated grabbing it.  I saw the ring box and thought I could have sworn I cleaned out this bag!  I stared at it and he told me to open it.  He then asked if I would marry him.  I am so glad it wasn't on the camera for everyone to see because that would have embarrassed me.

I like that I was completely surprised and had no idea.  Even if the game was more his thing than mine.  It was fun!!  He did a perfect job picking the rings as well.

  • We found out I was pregnant with DD at the end of January and already knew we would get married at some point, but we knew we didn't want to do it until after the baby came. I thought he'd propose while I was still pregnant, but I wasn't sure. I had been getting irrationally irritated about it (thanks pregnancy hormones) because I just wanted to be engaged since we were both sure about it anyway.

So one day in mid-April he had a half day at work and came home early and we went out to lunch.  I was in a mopey mood because he hadn't proposed yet and was being kind of grouchy. It started to drizzle a little and he wanted to stop by our neighborhood bar (which is where we first met) because he'd left his sunglasses there. He parked the car and asked me to just come in with him quickly. Irritated, I got out of the car and walked to the sidewalk to find him right under a cherry blossom tree and down on one knee with the ring in his hand. He asked and I said yes and started to cry. Yes, we got engaged outside of a bar, but I loved it because it was the same spot we'd first met.

  • We were living in a crappy apartment next to a park when I was finishing grad school. We loved the park and took walks there all the time. MH picked out the ring without me knowing and he waited for it to snow which took a few months apparently. He asked me to go for a walk in the snow one night which didn't seem unusual. I was bundled up in sweatpants and layers and a jacket and hat not my cutest moment. We were walking around the park and for some reason, I wasnt suspecting anything, I asked him "why do you love me?". So we always joke that I set him up perfectly and he got down on one knee in the middle of the snow covered baseball field. It was cute enough for me!

Now my brother on the other hand has the most romantic engagement story EVER. If anyone wants to hear I can share later.

  • DH took me back to Niagara Falls (where we had our 1st date, I know we are crazy going on our 1st date 5hrs away, but that's us!!). We spent the day walking around. It was cold and I usually stuck my hand in his jacket pocket at times like those but he wouldn't let me this time. He was being a jerk, and I couldn't understand it.

Then later we were at 3 Sisters Island me he proposed in a very quiet site right by the water. He knew I'd kill him if he went public. He told me later that he was bein a jerk because he was insanely nervous.

Then we spent the night just over the border on the Canadian side in Niagara Falls and we went to the casino and watched hockey at Shoeless Joes sports bar. We were the only ones not rooting for the Maple Leafs (we are Sabres fans).

He asked my mom before proposing and had it all planned out for weeks before this trip...

  • I was never proposed to. DH and I started dating in November and although I still had a (mostly empty) apartment we were living together at his house. He got promoted and transferred and the only way they would help move my stuff was if we could prove we were committed. Since we had only been together 5 months we weren't very convincing. We both knew we would end up getting married someday so we just went ahead and got a marriage license. I put up on Facebook a few weeks later that we were engaged and my mom flipped her shiit. She and my dad said I was ungrateful, I am a horrible daughter for not asking their permission to date or get married (uh, hello? I was 23), I'm worthless, etc. Anyway, I was upset and DH said "let's go get married tomorrow." So we did. Our families still don't know. We had a very awkward wedding ceremony 3 months later that was full of unwanted family opinions, half the people myparents invited without asking us, they didn't help pay for anything, etc. We have our "real" wedding (the first one) that was perfect for us. Didn't matter as much when the second one was crappy.

  • He asked me if I could wrap a Christmas gift he had gotten my mom. It was in a big so I took it out and it was a personalize ornament with our names and engaged, then with that date on it.

Ok so my brother just got engaged this past year and I love their story. My brother had studied abroad in Rome, Italy about 2 years ago for architecture. During one of his day trips there, he visited an area along the coast called Cinque Terre, these 5 small fishing towns. Looks like this:nbsp;imageBetween some of the towns there is a walkway along the sea cliff called the Via Dell'Amore path of love?.Anyways there is this cool story behind this trail, but nowadays couples go on this path and they place padlocks onto the wire mesh and throw the key into the sea. Like this:imagenbsp; So this year he planned a surprise trip for his GF at the time to go to that area and stay in a bed and breakfast. He had ordered online a red padlock and he had it engraved with "X, will you marry me?" So they got there and he took her for a walk on this trail and he gave her the padlock followed by the ring. They locked it on the fence and threw the key into the sea! Not sure how he's ever going to top that.

    wow! Amazing!! So jealous...

  • I didn't really get a proposal either. DH and I were driving somewhere and he said that it would be great if we could just keep driving and go to Vegas. Then we could get married. I told him that I would like that, but we couldn't do an impromptu trip. So we secretly planned a trip to Coeur d'alene, ID to get married. We bought the rings together, drove to ID, and got married. We came back from our trip saying we got engaged on the Fourth of July. Almost exactly a year later we had a wedding. Both families and our friends have no idea.
  • I love proposal stories!  I'm still impressed that DH managed to surprise me with his proposal.  First, it's really hard to surprise me because I always figure it out.  Second, we had discussed our ideal "timeline" and so I knew that he was going to be proposing at some point that summer.

I was living with his family for my summer job after graduating.  I had to go home for a couple of days for an interview and when I got back to his parents house he greeted me at the door in his new suit.  I thought he was just showing it off because he'd just bought it and had it altered, so I figured he was just showing me how well it fit since I'd helped him pick it out and everything.  We went inside and he handed me a ring box, which I thought nothing of because earlier that summer he'd handed me a box for jewelry (from our friends' engagement ring) with a flower in it.  Inside was a poem he'd written and a key.  He took me up to our room and on the bed was a beautiful jewelry box (my graduation gift from him) that the key opened and the engagement ring was propped inside.  When I opened the box up, he got down on one knee, asked me to marry him and I managed to get a "yes" out around my blubbering.

  • I knew it was coming because his lease was running out and I told him that I wasn't living with anyone unless I was engaged to him.  We had a trip planned to Bermuda, we were leaving on Wednesday.

After work on Monday, I went to get waxed.  I get home from the appointment and he is sitting on my couch.  I am a huge online shopper so everyday there is a new box waiting for me.  On the dining room table there is a big box with an Amazon label.  I open the box (I was expecting it to be the bathing suit I had ordered for him for the trip) and there were 2 dozen peonies (my favorite flower) in it. He is kneeling (on 2 knees) on the couch watching me, I am stunned.  He looks at me and says, "do you love me?", I say "yes".  He says, "do you love me enough to marry me?"  and pulls out the ring.

He puts the ring on my finger, I am completely speechless.  He looks at me and says, "you didn't say yes yet".  Of course, I said yes.

I still get on his case that he never actually got down on one knee...

  • 2 months after we got together, staying in the spare room at his folks house over Chrimbo.

Just after I?d given him  a BJ. So I guess I was the one who went down on bended knee(s) but he popped the question.

I said yes and we married 5 yrs later.

  • I was away in college in the Bay Area. DH few up for Valentine's Day weekend and proposed to me in my loft as we were about to take a nap in prep for going out with friends that night. It was just us, and private, and really sweet. I almost grabbed the ring out of the box when he opened it!

Later I told him I was glad he didn't do any grand gesture and he confessed that had we been in LA he would have been able to come up with something more fancy but he was glad we were away too.

  • He was out with friends and we were suppose to hang out. He called to say he'd be late so I told him I was just going to stay in. A little while later he called and asked me to come over, he was ordering Chinese and I told him Id already eaten but that Id stop by. After he was done eating he tossed me a fortune cookie and I cracked it open and saw a piece of metal and said "What the F, that's so gross there's metal in this one." I turned towards him and the ring fell out with a slip of paper that said Will You Marry Me. He had apparently been ring shopping with his dad for a couple weeks and ended up having something custom made. It was ready that a day so he and his BFF went and picked it up and he was so excited he couldn't wait to give it to me. He and his mom spent all afternoon opening fortune cookies and hot gluing them and the packages back together which is why he had to stall on what time I came over. He gave me a silver fortune cookie at our engagement party and part of our wedding favor was fortune cookies with love quotes inside.
  • H proposed on my birthday.

I had just run the Boston Marathon the day before and I think he wanted to do one if those finish line proposals, but I didn't feel well after the race so he didn't do it then.

The day after the race he asked me if I wanted to walk the dog around Castle Island, which is along the water. I didn't want to go because I was sore from running the marathon! He took our "dog bag" which usually has his toys and water and stuff in it. When we got to Castle Island, he took out a blanket and we sat down and enjoyed the scenery. He took the ring out of the bag and proposed, and when I said yes he took glasses and champagne too.

  • okay so I'm not married any more, but I love my engagement ring so I'll share the story. We were having dinner at some restaurant in Napa Valley. I couldn't understand why the restaurant staff was looking at my in a peculiar way throughout the whole dinner. Little did I know that they all knew what was about to happen. Out came dessert and written out in chocolate on the plate was, "will you marry me?" A blue Tiffany box was presented and everyone was cheering and starring at me (this part was very embarrassing because I don't like attention on  me).

We later went bike riding along the vineyards and I was still in shock about the proposal and not paying attention to where I was going. I fell hard and he had to rush me to his clinic about 1/2 hour away to wrap my broken arm.

Now that I'm newly divorced, I still have my ring because it's beautiful. I'm thinking of either turning it into a necklace or some other kind of jewelry or just sell it and go on a vacation. God knows I deserve both after what I've been through this year!

  • At the time, I was living in Boston and he was living in NYC.  I was planning to move there in a week to be with him and went down on a random weekday to spruce up his apartment and clean it up a little before I moved down permanently.  I came in wearing old raggedy clothes and bringing a broom, mop and cleaning supplies in tow.  Lo and behold, his Dad had flown in from out of town, and they completely redid the whole apartment- put in new furniture, cleaned out certain areas to give me space, etc.  When I walked in, he had rose petals leading from the door to the couch where he was sitting with the ring.  I was literally more shocked at the way the apt looked and just walked around for 5 min in awe before I realized he was proposing.  We had already been together for 8 years prior so I knew the engagement ring was coming at some point..the apartment cleanup definitely not!

  • I was going to be in Europe for the summer, traveling and studying.  DH was going to come out after I'd been there a month and spend a week with me.  We'd been dating 5 years, and I kind of thought he would end up proposing there.

My birthday was a week and a half before I left, and DH told me he wanted to do something special, but it would be a surprise.  He told me to pack a bag with a nice dress, swimsuit, and clothing for 3 days.

The day before my birthday he picked me up and drove me to the ferry that would take us to Catalina Island.  I was pretty excited because I'd never been to Catalina.  We got off the ferry and he wanted to walk around, but I wanted to drop off our stuff in the room, so I was annoyed with him.

But when we finally got to the room, I understood why he needed to stall - the room had rose petals all over the floor, bed, bath and there was a table set at the bay window, overlooking the water.  He had my favorite foods catered for dinner from a local restaurant.  I thought this was all for my birthday, so I still wasn't expecting anything.

We ate dinner and watched the sun set over the water.  After we cuddled up on some oversized chairs in the rooms and DH started telling me how much he loved me and wanted to be with me forever. Then he got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife.  I was in tears.  And when I said yes, he opened up a bottle of champagne he had chilling in a bucket in the wardrobe.

He had asked my dad's permission weeks earlier, and everyone in my family knew it was happening.  He had taken his grandmother's diamond and designed my ring himself.  He purposely asked the day before my birthday so it wouldn't take away from my actual birthday and I wouldn't spend all our time together in Europe wondering if/when he was going to propose.

  • I was proposed to twice (both my MH in case there was any confusion haha)

The first time was perfect. We flew out to California to a city that is MH's last name, so I kind of knew something was up then. We stayed at this cute little motel that had this firepit set up in their "backyard". We bought a bottle of champagne and he poured two glasses while we were sitting outside at night. He had this cute little speech, then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said yes.

We had our issues, and the ring was returned to the jeweler.

The second time, we took the train to Downtown Crossing in Boston to see if my ring was still at the jeweler's. (this was about 3 or 4 months after we returned it). Somehow, it was still there, so we "re-bought" the ring. I said I could just put it on my finger then, but MH said no.

We walked around Boston Common and near Frog Pond, and he got down on one knee again and asked me. I was giggling because obviously I knew he had the ring. I had to act surprised though, because there was this random photographer was decided to take a picture of us.. talk about awkward. It was cute though, because our first date was at Frog Pond.

Sorry, that turned into a novel.

Hahaha...yeah, I guess I should share too, huh?

We met in Japan summer after sophomore year in college (long story-he was at the Naval Academy and I was in Navy ROTC at Mizzou, we were both sent to the same ship there for training) and had our first kiss on a bench there.  The ship had some benches on it that we would sit on and watch the sunset, getting to know each other for the next week.  Then, we flew back to our respective colleges and had a long distance relationship for the next year.  The following summer, I flew out to visit him in MD and he got us a nice hotel to stay in.  We walked around DC and stopped to sit on a bench for a while.  He got down on one knee and said, "We started our relationship on a bench, and I'd like to ask you on another bench if you'd spend the rest your life with me."  I was NOT expecting it, so my response was "Are you serious?!"  He said, "Is that a yes?"  We were married a year later.

  • He never ever wanted to talk specifically about getting married.  Didn't want to look at rings, nothing like that so seriously I had no idea when it was going to happen. He really likes surprises so I was clinging to the hope that he would do it at some point since we had been dating for 4.75 years.  We went to Taos, the place we met and had been many times for a long weekend and had had such a great time. Hiked, played disc golf, went to the river, nice dinners, etc.  Honestly getting proposed to was far from my mind since we had done weekends like this many times.

We had decided to walk back to our rental house after an awesome brunch and were sitting on the patio outside.  He asked me to go in and get us beers and I did. I came back out and he was standing up which was sort of weird but whatever.  I am so naive.  He gave me hug, told me he loved me, then he started to get down on one knee and in my mind I am like, no effing way right now.  He asked me to marry him, I kept asking if he was serious - like 10 times.  Finally I said yes, kissed, and so on.  It was really wonderful being so caught off guard and I was so touched that he had put so much thought into it.

He gave me 2 diamond bands that were his mom's (she died when he was a senior in high school) and said that when we got back home we would go pick something out which we did.  It was great because like I said, I had NO idea and was so surprised.  It was a great weekend and we got married 100 days later.  Shortest and most ridiculous engagement ever.  Planned a wedding for 200 in 100 days which was absurd.

As we get closer, I figured out where we were going- Reunion Tower. If you've ever seen the Dallas skyline it's the building with the round ball at the top. That round ball is a rotating restaurant.

We get there and I am already nervous because I get anxious going up high in an elevator. We get in the elevator and it's one of the glass ones that you can see through on the way up. My palms started sweating. DH tried to hold my hand but it was clammy and wet. Sexy. I think it will be alright once we get to the top. The elevator doors open, I look out, and the room is spinning.  I thought "Oh Lord, I'm going to puke and ruin the whole thing."  It took a minute to get my bearings. We had a delicious dinner. They brought out covered dessert tray and lifted the lid to reveal a silver box on a plate of rose petals. He dropped to one knee and started into an oration about the past year and how he couldn't imagine his life without me. As he's giving the speech, (I am a little impatient) I am trying to read what is engraved on the box.  I keep thinking maybe he's going to keep talking until I read "Will you marry me?" on the box...Nope. Finally he gets to the question, and I say yes.

Like Blu, we were headed on a trip (to Hawaii) the following week and he didn't want my anticipation of the proposal  to ruin the trip.  I can't help thinking how amazing the proposal would have been with a Mai Tai, palm trees, sunset, sand between my toes, and the ocean providing the soundtrack. But when it comes down to it, it resulted in me marrying my DH, so if we had been knee deep in pig sh!t, I'd have still said yes and still have been grateful to have this amazing man in my life!

  • Was proposed to on Christmas day, while I was eating lunch at my Uncles Ranch in Temecula, CA. He did it in front o all my cousins and aunts and uncles. My parents had gone ring shopping with him two days before. I had been dropping major hints for months on the kind of ring that I wanted. My mom has a jeweler so I was happy he went with them to get a deal. It caught me by surprise of when he was going to do it, but kinda knew it was coming.
