Spotting...when to call doc?

I'm having my first ultrasound on Thurs but have been having a little spotting every day for the past 5 days or so.  Today it seems a little heavier.  I had very little spotting the first time around and certainly not for consecutive days.  I'm trying not to worry but you know that's easier said than done.

Should I just hang tight til my ultrasound or call the doc to squeeze me in sooner?
What would you do?

Re: Spotting...when to call doc?

  • By the way, I'm posting here because I'd rather ask somewhere other than the first Tri board.

  • I'm not much help with the spotting, because I always forget what the procedure is for that. Call and tell your OB's nurse, I think? Sorry, I'm one of the lucky ones who has never had spotting during pregnancy. Anyway, I shy away from the trimester boards too, but I love my birth month board. Have you checked yours out? Just don't tell people when you introduce that you don't like the 1st tri board. That generally doesn't go over well. :)

  • It never hurts to call your doc.  Red is new blood and brown is old.  I spotted with both kids (mainly brown), but did have one gush of red with DD1 and she's a healthy 3 year old.

Try to stay off your feet and drink lots of water.  Sending positive thoughts your way.

  • Call your doc now. I had spotting at 7 weeks with DS2 and it freaked me out so I called my doc on a Friday night after hours and she was very serious and had me go to the hospital for an ultrasound. It ended up being that i had a placental tear and i was put on immediate bed rest and it eventually resolved itself. I cant imagine if i hadnt called though and just went about my daily activities. I hope this doesnt scare you as its pretty rare. It could also be low progesterone or it could be absolutely nothing! Call.

  • I'd call and see what they'd like you to do. Generally if it's brown blood then you're OK and my doc has always told me to take it easy and go on pelvic rest for about a week or so. If it's bright red and you have cramping then that COULD be a problem and you wanna definitely get checked out just in case.. Good luck!

With my DS I had brown spotting and after bloodwork it was revealed I had extremely low progesterone at 9.9! I was put on meds immediately and thank god DS turned out OK. With this pregnancy my progesterone was automatically tested and it was low (16.4) so now as bad but still requiring meds. It definitely helps to call and make sure everything is ok!

  • Call for sure, but did you recently have sex or strain with a bowel movement?  (They will ask).  If yes to either, that can explain the spotting.
