2nd child birth plan thoughts?

DH & I just had our 1st child and we are definitely in love and already talking about a 2nd. My question is, if your delivery with the 1st child didn't go as you had planned, did it change your mind for your birth plan for your 2nd child.

My example is we planned to do a natural birth. Unfortunately I ended up getting too close to pre-e and was induced. Then baby boy started having issues and I had more issues so we ended up in a c-section. My recovery was AWESOME!! As in I took pain meds in the hospital only and didn't need anything else once we left. I am almost debating a RCS for the 2nd child but I also want to try a VBAC. So, I'm not up in the air as my recovery was so great with the c-section.

Anyone else?

Re: 2nd child birth plan thoughts?

  • Well I had an emergency c section and never labored. What changes my thoughts is that I had HELLP syndrome (thought to be a severe form of pre-e). If I have PIH again I am doing a RCS for sure. If not, I will try for a VBAC, but if there is any doubt I will definitely get a RCS.

My recovery wasn't great but I can't put my health at risk with a vaginal birth if it will cause me to bleed out and die, especially with the recurrance rate of HELLP.

  • I was induced so I knew I was going to get the epi because I know that inductions can last for a while. For my next pregnancy if I end up with an induction again I plan on asking for the epi before they brake my water and praying that it works because this tine it didnt work. If I go into labor on my own I want to labor at home for as long as possible.

  • I had an epidural with DS1 and loved it, so I planned on doing the same with DS2. However, my labor was so quick that by the time they got the epidural in, I was already at 10cm and ready to push, so I only ended up having it in for about 15 min. The recovery was so much better. I wasn't nearly as swollen, and I felt almost normal very shortly afterwards. The pain was absolutely horrible while I was in labor, and I alternated between feeling like I was going to throw up and feeling like I was going to pass out, but because it was over so quickly and the recovery was so awesome, I'm thinking about maybe planning to have a natural birth for the third. I mean, I got very close to that with number two, so I think I can do it.

  • Ds1 was early and a got an epi. It was so painful and didn't work that I didn't plan on one for my 2nd. I had many complications and had to get induce that might meed am epi but went quick and didn't need One

. I think you need to leave your options opem and see how things go with a 2nd before you make decisions.

  • For my first I was scared to death of labor in general. I'd heard so many horror stories, and I don't do well with needles or hospitals or people touching me in general.  So when I spontaneously went into labor at 5 weeks, I asked for the epi when I was 3 cm and just starting to feel contractions.  I'll keep it short, but basically the birth ended in a happy mom and baby, but lots of interventions were used including pitocin and an episotomy.

When I found out I was pregnant with DS2 I did a ton of research and decided I really wanted to try a natural birth.  Mostly for selfish reasons of wanting an easier recovery than I had with DS2, but also to encourage BF'ing which I couldn't do with DS1.  Best.Decision.Ever.  As PP said the recovery was soooo much easier.  Yes it hurt, but it wasn't intolerable.  And it really made me feel in control of the situation which helped ease my fears of hospitals, Drs., etc. We're 99% sure we are done having kids but if or some reason we end up having a 3rd I will definitely do the natural route again.

  • Ill ask for the epi way sooner. I loved it and had no negative after effects.

With this baby I labored at home til I thought I would die. All it did was stress Dh and I out and make us exhausted for delivery and our first night caring for baby. By the time we got to the hospital I would have given away state secrets so I got a Nubain shot before the epi could be administered. That wouldn't have been necessary if I'd gone earlier. I'd slso rather us have a less horrible labor experience next time and just get some rest and pace ourselves through the whole thing

  • Yes. I ended up w/an emergency c/s with DS1 so I had a RCS the second time around mainly for planning purposes. We moved away from family and so my mom was able to come and stay with DS1. The thought of a VBAC never crossed my mind once I had my first c/s, but I'm a total OCD planner. I knew what I was getting into that way and how it would go and that was what made me decide to do it that way.

  • I had originally wanted a med-free birth until we found out we were having twins.  Then we planned for a c-section no matter what b/c I didn't want to chance a double whammy (vag birth then and emergency c-section to get the other one out).  I would absolutely not have an issue with having a c-section again since my recovery was easy peasy.  Now, to talk DH into wanting more kids!   LOL

  • I had a scheduled csection because they thought Emme was big, and it was a great experience. I would absolutely schedule a RCS.

  • My birth plan was ''Go with the Flow'' and I'll be keeping the same one next time around.  My labor experience is in the top 3 most horrible labor stories I ever heard and if I had been stubborn with a set plan in mind it could have turned wrong fast for me and the baby.  Ended up with an emergency c-section.

If I can try a VBAC next time I'll do it however if the Dr suggests a RCS based on what happened this time, I'll do that.
