Preemies

Preemie adjusted age Q

I have several baby books, including preemie books. I know many preemies have adjusted ages. My preemie was born at 32 weeks and is now 2 months old. Her adjusted age would be zero! LOL! She has no health problems and is perfectly healthy. Thank God!

Here's my question: For baby milestones, are preemies delayed for everything? Do we go by adjusted ages for preemies for milestones? Which milestones don't need to be adjusted?

Re: Preemie adjusted age Q

  • I still struggle with that b/c most people don't understand, especially since she is doing so good.  She hit most milestones within reason, but she is all over the place right now.  My pedi wants to use her actual age, so I just go in knowing what she has and hasn't done and be realistic.  You know your kid and you know when they are making progress, that is the most important part!

  • Until they are 2, all milestones are adjusted. By that point they have usually caught up or the difference is so slight it's pretty unnoticable.

  • We go by adjusted and if she hits something at her actual age that's great.  She didn't smile until 10 weeks and it took awhile for her to socually interact and grab for things.  Now, for the most part, she seems to be hitting things at her actual age, but it seems common for full term babies to be all over the board as well.

  • I stopped reading books and paying attention to WHEN she was supposed to be doing things.  Instead, I focus on the sequence of events of things that she's supposed to do.  For example, she needs to sit, then go up on all fours, then crawl, etc.

Granted, I have a 26-weeker who is all over the place, and we have EI once a week, so I'm not being totally clueless. The EI lady tells us what to work on for the next week. I just couldn't read the books anymore since my daughter's situation was so different.  In general, you go by their adjusted age until about the age of 2.  Like PPs have said, if she reaches something at her actual age, then yay!

GL! I'm glad to hear that she has no problems and is perfectly healthy!

I agree with this.  Our pedi didn't technically go by adjusted but did take that into consideration when she was a tiny bit behind the average.  Once she was talking she was caught up and you could barely tell she was a preemie, but she was also 33w5d.  Most people have no idea she was early, plus she's pretty big for her age.
