Indiana Babies

Intro and Plea for advice

Hello!  I am new to thebump, and I am about to be new to Indiana.

My husband and I are excited to be expecting our first child in April!  To add to that, we just found out that my husband's company is moving him to Indianapolis. We need to be moved in 5-6 weeks, and I would really appreciate any advice y'all could give us.  Here are the major questions that keep running through my mind:

-Where should we live?  We were told that we need to be north, but I am completely unfamiliar with the communities and suburbs in the area.  We currently own our home, but we would like to rent for a while to ease the stress of the move.

-Who will be my new doctor?  Can anyone recommend their ob/midwife?

-Who will be my child's doctor?  Do y'all have any recommendations for pediatricians/family practitioners?

We are full of nerves and excitement, and any information you could send our way would be really helpful.  I so look forward to joining your community.  Thank you in advance!

Re: Intro and Plea for advice

  • I live on the southside, work on the north and southside, and grew up on the west where my parents still live. I grew up pretty poor and would consider us now middle class. Where you chose to live, at least for me should be in relation to work. On the north Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville are all nice places. The north is the action: Fashion malls, claypool court, lots of nicer restraunts. Lots if traffic.

I would personally avoid eastside or the areas inside the 465 loop, rule of thumb is live outside the loop if you can.

Westside: Avon, Speedway though in the loop and brownsburg are all nice. Less traffic but still great things to do.

Southside: Greenwood, New Whiteland. this is where i own and we love it. Smaller towns but same shopping. A lot less traffic. To me it was an area more family oriented but just my opinion.

An ob around here really chooses your delivery place. I am planning on delivering at Methodist. its downtown, convenient to all my family and his. My dr also delivers at Clarian North. Dr Karen Gallagher at Methodist medical plaza west side. I wanted an all female practice and guarentee that if all things go as planned Dr G would be delivering my baby.

On the southside I have heard great things about Dr Jessica Bell who delivers at Community South and St Francis South.

Our pediatrician is Dr Mary Elise Hodson in Greenwood. I work at two hospitals and asked many coworkers, drs who they rec and most said this practice. Its all women, you chose 1 to be primary knowing her day off ours has Tuesdays off. You take a tour, meet all of them. In two years i have no complaints, I can call anytime and get a response back in about 20 minutes by a dr ir nurse. Our Dr is not only concerned about baby but whole family. We were there yesterday and Dr gave me some advise on my cold too.

Goodluck, if you have questions feel free to ask.

  • Caramel and Fishers has a lot of shopping places. Many say people there are very rude,  but I have never noticed.

    Zionsville  is just gorgeous!

  • What a stressful time for you!  Do you know what side of town your husband will be working on?  That might help in making some recommendations for you.  Feel free to PM me with any questions!

  • Pretty much anywhere north of 56th Street is pretty nice, but if you are talking suburbs and want to still be close to civilization, you can't really go wrong with Carmel (expensive), Zionsville, Noblesville or Fishers.  Westfield just a hair further north than Carmel, but growing.

Can't help you with a ped office, as we live on the west side, but my wife's OB office is Lifetime OB, up in the St. Vincent hospital area (86th and Township Line Rd).  Both my wife and one of her cousins-in-law use them.
