Maternity Support Belts

This is my firs post, but I've been learning a lot from everyone over the 6 weeks.  I'm 14 weeks pregnant today with identical twin girls!  We are very excited.  This week, my doctor told me to try to gain 16 lbs. in the next 6 weeks.  I'm working hard to gain weight because I'm not normally a big eater, and today I feel like I'm making some progress.  I feel like my stomach has grown overnight.  It's so heavy!  I think I need to get a maternity support belt soon because the muscles at the top of my stomach feel like they are under some strain.  Is there a particular type or brand that is better to buy?  Since I still have so long to go, I don't want to waste money on the wrong one.  Thanks in advance for the input.

  • Congratulations on your twin girls!

If you're already feeling sore and tried, you should definitely get one because it will get 100 times worse! I got the one from Babies R US and thank goodness I did. I have used the heck out of that thing and at this point I can't walk for more than 2-3 min without severe aches if I'm not wearing that band - it is truly a lifesaver.

Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy!

  • I have one I ordered on amazon called the "best prenatal cradle." It is hideous to wear bc it crosses your chest but it helps your back lifts the bump. I started using it around 24 wks when I really got big. Now I'm 37 wks and some days that thing is a lifesaver. I'm carrying all up front which puts a big strain on the back.
Protein!! Bars, shakes, whatever. Eat as much of it as you can. Trust me, it really benefits the babies. Good luck to ya!
  • Congrats! I am actually heading to babies r us today to get one myself.  Hopefully it works.

  • Get one asap! They are amazing! I bought the big one from Motherhood, but got another one from BRU in a larger size a bit later in my pregnancy. BRU was a bit cheaper and it seems to be the exact same belt! I carried all up front and high for most of my pregnancy and that thing reallyhelped me function. My OB recommended the prenatal cradle, but I never needed that much extra support.

I also struggled with weight and met with a dietician due to IUGR at 32 weeks. She recommended lots of Ensure, eggs, peanut butter, and hummus. I couldn't tolerate dairy in the end, but that was a good way to gain early on. Ensure clear helps if you can't do dairy.

  • Congratulations!

I also had the BRU belt - it really helped.  I had a lot of feeling of pressure on my cervix, and it relieved that almost completely.  I wore it all the time from about 25 weeks on.

I also recommend lots of protein!  I drank Carnation Instant Breakfast and made my own protein smoothies with fruit, yogurt, milk, orange juice, and pasturized egg whites.  They were so good (I promise you don't notice the eggs AT ALL).

This. I hated that it showed around my neck depending on the shirt but by the end I was literally wearing it all.the.time. I don't think I could have managed at work as long as I did (34wks as an elementary teacher) without it, and I definitely would have been in a lot more pain at the very end. I even wore it while I was sitting in my recliner all day the last month of my pregnancy.
