Re: Questions about birth center
How do you handle emergencies?
What is your transfer/epidural/cesarean rate?
How many people can be in the room?
Birth tubs/water birth?
How long can you stay after the birth?
I'm going to be visiting a birth center for the first time soon too, so I'm also in the process of putting together a list of questions.
One important question came up when my husband was talking to a friend whose wife delivered at the same center. They're a free-standing center, but affiliated with (and across the street from) a hospital. My husband's friend said that his wife was told that is she didn't give birth within 40 weeks, she would have to deliver at the hospital. I'm not sure if it's true, but I'm definitely planning to ask about that. If your center is connected to a hospital, you might want to find out their criteria for transfer.
I'm also planning to ask if the midwives do any stretching / massage of the perineum during labor to help avoid an episiotomy. If not, I want to be sure that my husband will be allowed to do it.
Also, I'm an acupuncturist and am planning to have a friend give me acupuncture for pain during labor, so I want to make sure that's allowed.
I'd love to hear other suggestions about what to ask too!
I'd
Like PP said, how long can you stay? (ours is 12 hrs)
what is the transfer policy and procedure?
What are the procedures/where is the equipment for neonatal resuscitation? (ours is the same as the hospital's, just covered with a quilted homey fabric.
How long do you have after water breaking before you need to have labor artificially augmented (and therefore be transferred to hospital)? (our center's policy is 48 hrs barring other circumstances).
What is the visitor policy?
