Parenting after a Loss

Why are you so pukey?! And another question...

So for the last week or so CHarlie has been very pukey. Well maybe not full on pukey just spit up mostly. But all the time. Occasionally it is full on puking out the nose though. Nothing has changed in my diet really so I'm not sure what's causing it. She's also very farty but has been since day one. I have an appointment next week with the pedi. Do you think I need to go in before then?

Also, our pedi told us she doesn't need a bath more than twice per week but it really seems to help her sleep. Is there any reason not to bathe her more frequently?

We are all a little weird and life's a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • My little guy is very pukey/spit up and gassy as well. He is almost 6 weeks old and has been like that since the about 3 weeks. I haven't been able to pinpoint anything in my diet (also haven't eliminated anything) that is causing it. I thought at first that he was just drinking too much (EBF) so I would stop him even if he wanted to still drink. But then he was eating all the time, so I went back to letting him eat for around 15-20 minutes. The only thing I make sure to do all the time is to stop and burp him more often. This seems to help with the gassiness.

As for bathing, I bathe everyday because it also helps him sleep (and he spits up so much!) But I only use soap every other day.

  • As far as the spit up and puking...I'd say its probably nothing to worry there are no other signs of illness. Of course, call your pedi if you're worried though...mom really knows best!

And I think it's fine to bathe every night unless you start noticing skin irritation or any other indicator that LO is bothered by it. We have a big tub that I get in with G every night. She looooves it. She floats on her back while I hold her head :] It's a great way to relax LOs. It's definitely soothing for my girl :]

  • When we noticed an increase in DS' spitting up after nursing or using a bottle we would interrupt the feeding to burp him before going back to feeding. He was a mad little guy but it seemed to help. Gosh, I love reading these posts because it has helped me remember what I used to do because I gotta be ready for this one coming soon! Wink

  • I'd also try burping more often.  Keeping her upright for about fifteen minutes after each feeding may help.  If you're still having problems, you can try eliminating all milk and soy (even hidden, which is fun) from your diet for several weeks.  They're common culprits in making LOs have GI issues.  I had to eliminate all milk for the first four months as it aggravated his colic and yielded no sleep for any of us.  To do that, you'll basically have to stop eating processed food.

I think the bath issue is overdrying of skin.  If you don't use soap, it's less drying, but it's still drying.  Ultimately, though, it's your kid and the pediatrician is giving recommendations, not orders.  So, if it works better for y'all to bathe her daily, then bathe her daily.  If her skin starts getting dry and lotion isn't helping, then you'll need to revisit the bath situation.
