Imaginary friends

Did anyone have imaginary friends when they were little?  Does anyone's kid have one now?

Betsy has an imaginary friend.  His name is Angel, he's a little boy, and he's always getting into trouble and has to be rescued.  Earlier this week he got stuck in the mud up to his belly, and then yesterday he got stuck in an apple tree.  This morning he was lost and needed me and Ms. Kyle (B's teacher) to go find him.

Is this normal for a 2.5 year old?  Is my kid destined to be a weirdo unless I produce a sibling for her ASAP?

LMK.

Re: Imaginary friends

  • I don't have any experience with this, but I think B just has a very vivid imagination. She's creative. She is already developing a dynamic, outgoing, magnetic personality that people are going to be drawn to. I'm sure she's a-okay. <3

  • I think it is normal and adorable.

I had a dog as my imaginary friend. I remember feeling like I was SURE she was real.

I told everyone that I had a dog but she jumped in the car, my grandma yelled at her her, and so she ran away. I would talk about how much I missed my dog and how I hoped the dog would stop being scared of grandma and come home. My poor grandma. I told teachers, strangers, friends, neighbors, and family about her chasing off my imaginary dog.

So I had a very well developed imaginary friend from 2 till 5 when my parents finally gave in and got me a real dog. And I am totally normal. I am not hiding bodies in my closet. I swear. Just don't look in there, k?

  • Yes. I even asked because I was worried about my 2.5 year old's overactive imagination and my pedi told me it was normal/fine. He clearly has a sibling so it's not that. lol

Ours isn't a person though. We have a neighbor who's a dragon. He has a family and they're building a cool house. LOL.

  • You know, reading this thread I am wondering if Paul has an imaginary friend. He has been talking about looking for the "big bear" all the time and asking where big bear is and saying "uh oh, where bear?!".

I have been saying that there is no bear and he is safe, because I thought he was scared. But he likes bears. An imaginary friend never occurred to me. Way to crush the kid's imagination, self.

That is hilarious.  Your poor grandma!

  • Thanks, y'all.  I always thought that imaginary friends happened later in childhood, Drop-Dead Fred style.  This makes me feel better!

ETA:  No promises on the sibling thing, tho.

  • Sometimes A will start talking to someone in the house.

...but now I'm just mostly convinced it's haunted.

  • Sounds like she is a creative one!!  I think it is normal. My DS has an imaginary brother named, Franklin.  He gets really upset when I don't tell him to get into the car in the morning or don't offer him some milk at dinner!!!  :)  I guess he isn't content with having just a little sister so he created an older brother!

  • I think that is adorable! I never had one, my DH said he did and he grew up to be an amazing artist! He can sculpt, paint, draw, ect. He is very visual.

Your DD is so cute BTW

  • Yes.  Her name was Nadine and I can still remember what she looked like.  My sister had one, a boy named John.  My younger nephew had 2, Sheriks and Jazzbo.  And they were NAUGHTY.  Sheriks stole things and Jazzbo smoked cigars and went to jail once.  But when he got out he needed my sister to cut his hairs.  Big Smile  Y'all can't even imagine how funny these stories were, OMG!

  • I had an imaginary friend.  His name was Johnny Carson & he was always getting into imaginary trouble.  He was miniature, like only 6 inches tall.  My family still teases me for that one.

I don't think DS has an imaginary friend but he does have an active imagination with everything else!

  • I am an only child so I had imaginary friends probably until I was way to old for it...

I had my BFF "Amy", she had red hair and did everything with me.  When she wasn't with me she lived in the land of imaginary friends, where there was a motherly figure "Kanga" and a few others.  I often wrote letters to those who lived in the imaginary land....

Jack does that too and it freaks me out. Our house was built in 1900 so I assume it's some ghost.

  • I love these stories! Imaginary friends seem way cooler than real friends.

I knew a girl who had one until she was about three. Then she ate her imaginary friend one day at the park and never had another one. She is almost 15 now and is totally normal. More normal than she should be.

  • Eating the imaginary friend and the imaginary friend spying from while people change is killing me.

  • I didn't have any imaginary friends, but I did have stuffed animals, many of whom had unique dispositions and personalities.

  • Totally normal. We rode to school (she was 5 Wednesday) with Diego today and we held his hand all the way into the school.
