Can we talk BC again?

ETA oops didn't see post below

Monday I'm supposed to have my choice if bc made up and it's between mirena and the mini pill. I'm not completely made up on mirena and I'm looking for someone to talk me out of it. DH says the pill but he didn't give me a reason why. So does anyone have a good reason on why not to get mirena?
ATA I was on the mini pill for 16 months after DS1. It took us 6 months after i went off of it to get pg with L.

  • I was scheduled to get one but then found out my insurance doesn't cover them. Minor detail. lol So that was my $1200 reason not to. GL on your decision!

  • I can't talk you out of the mirena, I love mine, never had a single period with it. I have always had issues with the pill so for me it was a no brainer, sorry I'm not much help!

Edit: DD previous post, must have hit enter too early

I don't have a reason to not get the mirena, except that for me, I was out of town during the time that they were going to put it in and so I went with the mini pill instead. I haven't had a ton of problems remembering to take it. I just set an alarm on my iPhone (which is always with me) and it does the remembering for me Wink

is it super important to take it at the same time everyday?

The mini pill has to be taken at the same time every day to be effective because it's a progesterone only BC... I think you have to use backup protection if you don't take it within 2 or 3 hours of your set time.

That's what I've been told too. I was on it for 16 months after having ds1 and never followed it but maybe we were just lucky.

  • I took progesterone only pills (mini pill) for at least 8 years due to ocular migraines preventing me from having estrogen in BC.  You HAVE to take the pill within the allowed time or it isn't effective.  It is a PITA but like PP said, use an alarm and keep it in your purse if you're out, and you'll be fine.  Also, a lot of stress can give you break through bleeding and allow conception.  I would have taken an alternative like Mirena if it was an option.

i absolutely adore my beautiful daughter but I'm not going to lie... She's definitely a result of not being so good at taking my normal pill and they definitely didn't tell me that part... I may need another option. :|

  • iI could never remember to take the pill since my first pregnancy (ended in early miscarriage) I took it everyday same time and I ended up pregnant. So I don't trust the pill. I love Mirena, I dont have to think about it and I would only have spotting for a couple days every about 4 months. If it wasn't covered by insurance I probably wouldnt have it though, it can be expensive. But I see from one of the other responses it is much more expensive in the US the it is in Canada

  • I can't talk you out of Mirena, because so far, I love it.  It's not that bad to get put in, and essentially takes all the work out of it for you.  I also like the fact that it doesn't override your cycle like pills do.  Plus, when I was on the pill, I hated taking them, especially because you have to be so exact about the timing.  Plus, my Dr. said that usually after you get Mirena taken out you can get pregnant again immediately, whereas with the pill, it can sometimes take a while to flush all the hormones out of your system.
