Cluster Feeding? are my girls eating TOO much???

I have a set of twins that were born August 24, 2012 (I carried to 36 weeks and they weighed 5.3 each). They are creeping up on three months and they've been doing what I hear is called "cluster feeding". They are currently exclusively formula fed and during the daylight hours will have 5-6oz every 3.5 to 4 hrs. But for the last few nights they seem to be starving right before bedtime.
Last night they had 6oz and 7:30 and then around 9:45 were starving and I offered 7oz (a friend suggested I offer more with the hopes they would last through the night) and they left pratically nothing. They did however sleep straight until 6am.

They are super healthy babies (at two months we were about 11.3lbs each), we experience a little spit up if they don't get a good burp but never a full blown THROW UP. Our Ped says as long as we don't have "THROW UPS" everything is kosher..I guess my worry is am i "over feeding" my girls?

Am i just being a worry wart first time mom?

Interested to hear from everyone else!

Thanks :)

  • My twins were born at about the same gestation and weight and definitely cluster fed that first month! They haven't been as hungry since then, but it could be that your twins are going through that 12-week growth spurt that I've heard about? It sounds like they're really growing nicely. (Mine weren't quite 11 lbs. at 2 months so your twins are great growers!) I'm sure as long as your pedi is up to speed and thinks it's okay then all is probably well. Wish I had more solid advice but sounds like you're doing great!

  • You may get some differences of opinion on here, but my philosophy is that you really can't overfeed a baby that young, whether it's breastmilk or formula. I would trust your babies to know how much they need, as long as they are growing appropriately.

I love a book called "Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense" by Ellyn Satter. There is a great chapter on formula feeding that may put your mind at ease.

  • I don't think you're overfeeding them, but if it seems like they're starving you may want to switch up their schedule a bit.  Have you tried feeding them every 2.5-3 hours during the day?  Maybe if they ate more throughout the day, they wouldn't be so hungry in the evenings.
