When to start counting...

If you spot before AF, do you count those days? As in, do you count the first day of spotting as CD1? I should know this, but I don't...

I use an app to track my cycle and it doesn't count spotting, it counts the first day of actual bleeding.

I agree with butterfly. We counted "red blood," not spotting.

My midwives and RE said CD1 was the first day of "true flow," when you need a tampon or pad. In fact my RE's office doesn't count it as CD1 unless you start "true flow" by a certain time...I think it's 4 PM? But that's probably a little more detail than you needed.

I suppose as long as I'm here I could answer the question, ha. My RE says full flow (i.e. need a tampon) before midnight counts as CD 1. I've been known to interpret the "need" for a tampon based on convenience though....my period is very difficult to define when spotting stops and period begins.
