Re: First Gyno Appt What to Expect
For those of you who asked (without the snide remarks) Yes i am serious I have not met my OB-GYN yet i have only dealt with a nurse at my family clinic. I live in Fort McMurray, Alberta where there are only 3 OB's and due to the 200+ babies born in town every month they are severely busy and so mom-to-be's are only refered to them once they hit mid 3rd trimester. Until that time we deal primarily with our family doctors and nurses. You don't need to see an OB to get prenatal care, in fact up here you can't even SEE an OB without being refered to by your family doctor.
My previous post was in reference to me having NO IDEA if meeting with an OB is different in any way from meeting with my regular nurse. I dont know if the protocol or requirements for an appointment are different.
Just thought i should clear that up.

Next time a little more clarification would be nice... no one was rude to you by any means.
The Canada ladies understood way better, but this board is mostly US based... Most of the Canada moms ask the advice specifically from other Canadians also to not confuse everyone else.

Sheesh, calm down. We had legitimate questions because, for the majority of ANYONE any of us have EVER known, (at least, those in the US) don't go long without seeing an OB. Plus, there have been a lot of ridiculous antics going on around here lately, so we're fully validated to question you.
In a previous post, you said "doctor," so therefore, we go with the fact that you've seen a actual doctor. An OB/GYN is a doctor just like any other doctor, just specialized in delivering babies, women's health through life, and qualified to perform surgeries (such as a c-section or hysterectomy) should they be necessary.
Give more background in your posts if you don't want to sound questionable.
This one was covered back in 1st Tri. Probably would have been more effective to just check out the 1st Tri board for that one.
Thats a lot of babies up in Fort Mac!! I was actually born there, as were my neices... same Dr delivered my brother and his daughter lol. (sorry can't remember his name but I'm sure if there's only 3 you can figure it out)

No, I am in a large city in Canada and I have seen my OB since the beginning. However, if you think about it, why couldn't a GP do the visit? It's a blood pressure, urine dipstick and answering questions about pregnancy. They are more than qualified. If there was any concern at any time, the GP would refer the patient to an OB sooner. Also, here a lot of GPs are trained to deliver babies. They are not OBs but they have done extra training to be qualified.
Fort Mac is rural and there are doctor (specifically specialist) shortages in many rural Canadian towns. Fort Mac is very busy because of the oil industry and the recent "boom" in people moving there has required them to use this system to ensure every woman is given consistent care, rather than having to turn women away from OB practices. There is a huge need for OBs and if they are able to fill the positions I am sure women will be referred earlier in their pregnancies than the OP.
Good luck OP! It shouldn't be much different than your regular visits but since you probably have a lot of questions, I would write them down to ensure you maximize your time with your OB.

They probably won't give you a pelvic exam until 35-37 weeks, but I'd be prepared down south just in case. I hate surprises. Then you can at least ask when they will.
My friends in the UK never see an OB unless there is an issue. It's midwife midwife midwife. So I don't think your case is weird at all.
No. Not at all. I've been seeing an OB since I found out I was pregnant. I live close to Toronto in Ontario and it's the norm here.
No worries! It even blew a few minds of family members i have even in Edmonton (only 5 hours south) It's not an all over canada thing its just because of a severe lack of having doctors up here because all the money is in the oil field instead of the medical one. The 3 OB's we have are ridiculously overworked, so much so that in fact there is a very high percentage of people that even have their babies delivered by nurses in the maternity ward up here if the doctor is with someone else. Our maternity ward only has 10 single occupancy rooms and the one assessment room that has 3 beds which if necessary are used as "overflow" beds. It's craaaaaazy how many preggers there are up here though, i swear its something in the water as it seems like pregnancy is more common than the common cold sometimes!!
