Moving DD to a toddler bed?

I was just doing some online "window shopping" and came across toddler beds, so now I'm wondering how to handle the whole bed situation.

When did you move LO into a toddler bed? Is 2 years to young to transition? Also any idea how long you can keep a baby in a bassinet?

DD will be 19 months old when LO#2 is born and we plan to keep LO in the bassinet in our room. Now because of space we only kept DD in the bassinet for 2 weeks, with this one we're thinking s/he'll be in it much longer then that, but eventually s/he will need a crib.

DD's crib can be converted into a toddler bed and I am almost positive it can be used as a head board/foot board as well... so I'm not sure if we should keep that as her crib/future bed and purchase a new crib (we'd be looking at $180, but if it can in fact be used as a twin bed then maybe it's worth it?) or purchase DD a new toddler bed like this one and use the crib for LO#2.

TIA!

Re: Moving DD to a toddler bed?

  • My girls are 19 months apart. We kept DD2 in the rock and play in our room until she was almost 6 months old, so that we could hold off on moving DD1 out of the crib.

When DD1 was 23 months, we set up her toddler bed in her new room and planned to spend a few weeks talking it up and adjusting to the idea before moving her. Instead, the day after it was set up she asked to nap in it. She did great, and that was that, she's been in it every since. A little over a month later we moved DD2 into the crib.

Our crib does convert to a toddler and later full size bed, but we chose to keep it as a crib. Our toddler bed was handed down to us. If it hadn't been, we would probably have gone straight to a twin bed for DD1.

  • Thank you :) that is very helpful!

Your DD took to it like a pro! I hope M does the same... did it make your mornings more interesting? With DD able to get up by herself, or did she just play in her room?

Unfortunately we don't have anyone with a toddler bed to pass down so I'm not sure what we'll do, I'd like to leave our crib as just that and not worry about ordering the rail and all that nonsense... not to mention having to put together another crib!

How long did your DD stay in the toddler bed before you put her in a twin?

  • Mine are 15 months apart, but we kept DD in our room until she was 6 months old in her co-sleeper.  We didn't buy a new crib before she was born, but by the time she was 3-4 months old, it was pretty clear that DS was not ready for a big boy bed. So we ended up buying a new crib for DD.  DS stayed in his crib until he was 3, and DD is still in hers.  We will be using one of their cribs for this new kid!  When we moved DS, he went right to a twin bed.

I am glad that we were able to make it that long with the 2 of them contained.  DS never climbed out, so it was a safe place for them to be without supervision.  They shared a room until DS went to his big boy bed, and it worked out well.  The few times they have been together since (DS's crib is still set up in his room so sometimes DD sleeps over), DS gets out of his bed and they play games like DD throws out her blanky and DS gets it.  Then they never go to sleep!  Even without them sharing a room, DS gets up in the morning to wake us up where before he would sing or talk to himself until it was time to get up.

  • Ds1 was 13.5months, DS2 was 18mths. Both moved straight into twin beds and ds2 actually moved into the room with ds1. You are going to get all sorts of ages for this. You just need to do what you feel comfortable with. We never had issues with either of our boys moving into their twin beds. They are pretty low to the ground and we used a bed rail for a little bit with ds1. With DS2 we just used a blow up bedrail which has worked great. Personally we didn't want to do a toddler bed. It would have meant just one more transition.

We close the bedroom doors at night per fire safety rules. We've never had issues with the boys wondering around. They wait for us to get them in the mornings. They have never known a difference so it's never been a problem. They do have a tot clock now that turns green when they are allowed to get out of bed. But that just means they play in their room until we get them out.

DD1 never gets out of bed unless someone comes to get her. We have no clue why, but she will wait in her bed, just singing or reading, until someone opens the door and tells her she can get up. If only that obedience spread to the rest of our day :P

She's still in the toddler bed now, and we could probably keep her in it for a while longer, but we're planning to get a twin for her around the time she turns 3 in February.

  • DS was 19 months was DD was born.  She's in our room now; I think many bassinets are okay up to about 15 lbs.  We just moved DD into a queen size bed (we bought very nice furniture for him so we wanted it to last a while!).  The easiest way for us was to set up his new furniture but leave him in the crib in his room so he could get used to the new set up.  Then, we moved the crib out into another room completely so he could no longer see it--out of sight out of mind.  Even though he loved the crib, this worked and he's now sleeping in the big bed and the crib is freed up for DD to move into it by the time she's four months (under the pedi's recommendation).
