Toddlers: 24 Months+

Bedtime

We created a bad routine. We I was pregnant with dd2, my dd1 started regressing at bedtime so we started laying with her at night til she fell asleep. Now 9 months later we are still laying with her! Ugh, it's exhausting. There is no me time. How do I break this?? I've been laying here for 45 minutes!

Re: Bedtime

  • You could A) leave and let her CIO- make it impossible for her to leave her room.

or B) Start sitting on the floor while she goes to sleep. A few days later, move to the doorway. A few days later, sit outside. Hopefully, after a few days of that she won't need you there at all.

I'm in the CIO camp, but it's what you feel comfortable with.

We tried option A first, and that's how we found out DD will throw up if she cries too much.  So, after 3 nights of cleaning that up + dealing with an hour of screaming, we gave up and went with option B.  That took us about a week, and DD has been good ever since.

  • I'd just stop laying with her. See next to her on the bed and rub her back for 5 minutes and then leave.

This is how I would handle it.  Or at least something along these lines.  You could just switch it up a little similarly to what PP mentioned like, sitting next to the bed, rubbing her back until she starts to get drowsy, then saying goodnight.  Kind of like encouraging babies to go to sleep on their own by putting them in the crib just before they fall asleep.

  • oh boy, that sounds exhausting!

check out 123 Magic (book) section on bedtime routines. was a lifesaver for us! while i wrote that when she was in a crib, she's since moved to a toddler bed and it's still working for us. whatever you do, pick ONE routine and stick with it despite it maybe not working the first night.

I would try option B first. Either that or try having DH sit with her. I found DD1 would fall asleep faster for DH than she ever did for me.

  • Dr Karp, the happiest baby/toddler on the block guy, has a neat idea:

    What is Twinkle Interruptus?
You can use Twinkle Interruptus instead of cry it out. During the day, you teach patiencestretching techniques. You start using white noise in the bedroom to block out the sounds of the house. At bedtime, you snuggle up and read stories. Then you say, Hold on, I have to go see Daddy, and you go out for a few seconds, snuggle up again, then go out again and stay out for 15 seconds, then later on for 30 seconds. What happens is that after two or three nights, your child falls asleep while youre out of the room. You can do this from age 1 on.
