Tipping NBR

Watching the today show, and this lady is saying that we are supposed to tip 25%.  When did this happen?  I've been tipping between 18%-20%, and I thought that I was being generous.

Also, this lady is saying that we should tip take-out (like going and picking up teriyaki).  She is saying that the workers are taking the time out of their day to get your take out ready.  What? Isn't that what they are getting paid for?  They aren't serving me or anything.  I've never tipped take-out.

Am I cheap?

Re: Tipping NBR

  • No. You aren't cheap. I haven't worked in a restaurant in about a decade but I feel like 20% is an appropriate tip for a server.

The people working take out are generally paid on a different scale than the servers. When I did the take out counter, I was paid minimum wage to make up for the fact that I wasn't getting tips. So a dollar here or there from a customer was nice, but not necessary.

It depends on the place, though. If a bartender is also working take out, they really are taking time away from high paying customers and you should give them a little something.

  • If you're cheap, so am I. I always do the 18-20% and never tip take-out. I don't think I know anyone that does differently!

  • I tip ~20%.

    I never tip for takeout.

I don't consider myself cheap. I thought that was fine...

  • I'm with you on the 18-20%, and that's if they did a good job. It goes down pretty quick if waters don't get topped off or we have to flag them down.

I do tip take out if it's a place we regularly go to, but only $1-2.

  • I always tip 20%. I've always felt that was the norm. If I get exceptional service I might do 25% but that's rare. I don't think I've tipped under 20% but once or twice in my life for extremely horrible service. I always tip for any kind of delivery, but it depends for take out. If I get take out from some place where I know the workers make an hourly wage, like a local burrito place that doesn't have a wait staff, I generally don't tip. If it's from a restaurant its usually one of the wait staff who gets your order together. They only make a few dollars an hour to cover taxes, so I will tip in that situation. It's usually only a few dollars though because they are only getting the order together, and not serving. I don't know if I'm doing it right, but that's what I usually do.
  • You're totally not cheap. 18-20% is perfectly acceptable. I never tip for take out either. If the waiter is really crappy I don't tip as much. If they are awesome I tip more but typically, 18-20% is what I do.
  • I pay 20% tip, and for take out $1-2.
  • I tip at least 20% at restaurants, depending on the situation, how difficult I am, etc.

For takeout, I do tip if it's a local place that I'll return to.  People remember those kind of things, and it always works well for me (free drinks, extra sides, whatever)

  • I usually tip ~ 20% at restaurants, maybe 15% if the service was bad. I rarely tip for takeout.

  • I think that lady is whack! I tip 20% and that was always considered good. I never tip for take-out. I have always heard a bunch of other weird tipping things too such as, when you eat dinner out and get drinks you are only supposed to tip on the food not the beverages or tax. I just tip 20% on the total bill...it is easy and I don't really care if they get an extra 60 cents.

  • I think it depends on where you at what you should tip. I waiter/waitress 20% is good. Delivery $1 or $2 depending on how far they had to drive (sometimes more). Your hairdresser could more depending on the amount of time and the price of the cut.

I also work at Dunkin Donuts and we shockingly get tipped, but only cash. I don't see it as necessary but it very generous. We split it every other week between all 20 of us and it ends up being like 10 to 15 dollars.

I have been in the habit lately tipping at Liquid Planet since it is on the receipt when I pay with my debit card.

  • God I am cheap!

I give 15 percent usually but 20 percent if its good service.

Maybe its because we only go out once a month or less. The last time we went out, I ordered a mango tea and it tasted like pure water when I told the waitress she gave me attitude then proceeded to take 20 minutes getting me a new one. She brought out a sweet potato covered in brown sugar and butter yet DH stated he wanted it "dry".

I tip for delivery and take out if its local.

  • Ha, I'm cheep MH is not though and is too generous of a tipper (he does it to piss me off)  I tip around 15%(20% for great service) and I only tip for service, not take out.  I do take in to consideration where I'm eating too.  Like in MN servers get a higher min. wage than WI, or IA.

  • I tip 20 for food service and 25 for my hair dresser. We don't ever get take out but I always tip the kids working at the local ice cream place during the summer.

  • We tip ~20% when we eat in.  If there is a problem with the meal and something was taken off the bill, we tip including that amount.  Bartenders get $1-2 per drink.  We don't tip for take-out.  At Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, I will generally put the change into the cup.  We usually tip about 10-15% for delivery.

Do servers not get paid minimum wage? Do they get paid less than minimum wage? Is that legal? Or am I completely reading into this wrong?

The easiest way to explain it is to say that because they are tipped employees, servers make a lower minimum wage ($2.13 an hour). Their expected tips are built into their pay scale.

Wow that is crazy! I couldn't imagine, our servers got minimum wage, 10.50 per hour plus tips. My friends who served in high school were making so much money!

  • In Canada this is not the case, whew! haha I always tip 15% adn 20% for good service. In Canada servers get minimum wage plus tips ($10.50 plus tips). I'm a Chartered Accountant now and I sometimes think back to when I was waitressing and I made ALOT more money then... I worked full time and brought in over double my paycheck in tips (at LEAST $150 per shift).

I am a server and I am shocked at how many people have no idea I only make $2 an hour!  I would love to make $10 plus tips! are you in Canada too?

Yep I am In Canada, I really had no idea that servers get paid such low wages in the states! It makes sense now why tipping is a bigger deal there. If I get bad service I don't feel bad about not tipping because I know they are still making a hourly wage. But I think I would tip way more if I knew someone was only getting 2 an hour!

  • I tip 20% and sometimes more.

If I'm somewhere and I know the waiter(ess) is working there as a 2nd job, I tend to have more of a heart and tip 25-30%. Also, I tip the person at the nail salon more than 20% to get my nails done or my eyebrows waxed. For me, the personal interaction/attention for that amount of time is worth more than the couple of dollars that would = 20%. For take-out, it depends on the place and how I'm feeling. I tend to try to still do 20% but don't always. Some places don't even have the option of adding a tip when you pay by credit card/debit card so those places I just don't tip (but still feel bad).

  • I didn't know that minimum wage was 10.50 in Canada or that waitresses made that much still there too.

Minimum wage and employement standards are set provincially so each province is different. But my province is 10.25 and servers get minimum.
