Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Not walking yet.

My 15 month and 7 day old daughter refuses to walk on her own. She walks along furniture, holds on to things with one hand, even occasionally stands alone but only for a few seconds. We have beebread trying tirelessly to teach her but she just sits down. Does anybody out there have a good suggestion or magic solution?

Re: Not walking yet.

  • DS didn't walk until almost 14 months.  I wondered the same thing.  Don't worry too much, she'll get it.  I didnt think DS would walk and he just did one day.

The only thing I did, was have me and DH sit a few feet away from eachother and tried to coax DS to walk to one of us.  That is when he took his first steps.

  • DD was 16 months old yesterday...still not walking!  She cruises on everything, stands by herself, has taken one little shuffle - but just won't walk.  I try to get her to walk with her walking toy or, as pp said, to have her between DH and I and try to get her to walk from one to the other, but she flat out refuses.  She'll sit right on her butt.  I am not concerned, I know that she will do it on her own time, but it has just totally thrown me for a loop since DD#1 started walking just before her 1st birthday and because I had always heard that the second ones walk faster because they want to keep up with their older siblings.  HA!  The funniest think I've ever heard.  It will happen, don't worry too much about it.  I had DD at her 15 month appointment and the doc is not concerned at all.  I always say that she's a perfectionist - she won't do it until she can do it perfectly. • DS started walking a few weeks ago, but he's reallllllly slow and still crawls about 75% of the time. What really got him started was after his bath when he's the happiest. He has a stuffed frog chair that he likes to bounce on. I'd hold out a toy and get him really excited, he's bounce to a stand, and then take a few steps for the toy. Don't worry at all! Being that Lo is cruising, it means their motor function is fine, and they just need some time to gather their courage and... let go!

  • MIne is 15m also and right at the point yours is at.  It's a matter of confidence.  She's getting more each week, but you can't force it.  Videotape her now and then in a few weeks and see the difference.

  • This is my son... he doesn't want to do anything until he can do it perfectly. He also didn't start walking until last week at 15 months. My doctor also wasn't concerned at all. Sometimes the little ones are just cautious :)

  • My 17 month old is the same way. Some kids just take longer than others. I wouldn't worry about it or push it. She'll get better and better as time goes on. What we are trying to do is put her a couple feet in front of us as we sit on the floor and take our hands away and tell her to walk to us. She sometimes sits down, sometimes takes a step and falls into us, and sometimes she takes 5 or 6 steps into our arms. Also the little cars that have a seat to sit on or a handle in the back for pushing are good. When they push them from the back it helps their balance and gets them walking but still being able to hold on to something.

  • I know it's hard not to worry, but I am sure she will be fine--my DS will be 16 months next week and just started walking on his own last weekend.  He has been walking with his walker toys and cruising, and walking next to us holding our hand/finger for a few months.  Then a few weeks ago he got more confident and would take steps between DH and me across the living room (8-10 feet or so) but kind of thought that was a game and still wasn't walking as his primary mode of getting around.  Then last Friday night he just decided that was the day and started walking around like he had always been doing it...!  Just keep practicing with her and she'll get it!

  • My 1st DD didn't walk until she was almost 20 months!!  She was a late crawler and cruised for a long time and would even stand up in the middle of the room but refused to take those first steps!!  She was perfectly fine, I wouldn't be concerned.

  • My kid isn't walking either and she's pretty much the same age as yours - one or two weeks older - she won't even stand on her own. I am eager for her to walk, but she will do it when she is ready. Just have to be patient.
