Moms of 2 - Nursery Furniture Question

With #2 on the way, I'm trying to plan my budget for furniture expenses.  B has a VERY nice crib and dresser set.  I splurged.  It's Greenguard certified and has soft close drawers...  It converts from crib, to toddler bed, to full-size bed.

Now, when #2 arrives, B will be 20 months and likely old enough to move out of the crib.

Option #1: Buy a new furniture for B and transfer her current set to the baby.  This means I'd like to get a toddler bed that could covert to a full bed, and a dresser.

Option #2: Buy a new set for #2, perhaps one that doesn't convert?, convert B's crib to a toddler bed and voila.

There may be something I'm missing.  WWYD?

Whatever I buy, I want it to be of similar quality to the first set but I don't want to buy more than what I will really need.

Recommendations accepted.

Re: Moms of 2 - Nursery Furniture Question

  • We bought both kids new cribs. They both convert to toddler beds, then full sized beds. We got DSs at Walmart for $130 and we "splurged" on DDs at Burlington Coat Factory. It was $160. They are both Gracos and I LOVE their cribs.

I can't help with the furniture. DDs was DHs grandmothers furniture that I refinished. DS's furniture I bought off of Craigslist for $100.

The only thing we will buy new is cribs, but furniture I don't mind buying used. And my DD was 2 in August and she's still in her crib.

I can provide links to the cribs we got if you want.... Good luck!!

  • Ours will be a little closer than your two but we decided to get another convertible crib. I didn't want to rush DS to a toddler bed and have it not work out. But I like having the option that whenever we think he's ready we can switch his crib. Our boys are going to share a dresser for now and when they are older will most likely get their own. I also like the idea of DS still be contained in his crib and not worrying about him.

ETA: We got our 1st crib from JCPenney and 2nd from WalMart. While neither of them are solid wood, I like to quality and the WalMart one was less than $150 with mattress.

  • I don't have a ton to add but I did want to say that every single mom I have talked to with 2U2 says to keep the crib for #1 for as long as possible.  We were talking about trying the toddler bed with Olivia at 15 months and we may still do it but what we did decide is that we are going to get a convertible crib that becomes a toddler bed instead of just a toddler bed.  Reasoning being that if the bed backfires on us, we still have the option of the crib.

In our situation, Olivia is getting a new room and #2 will get what is her current nursery so we are buying furniture for her.  Most of it except the crib we already have thanks to hand me downs that we will refinish.  If you are trying to save some money you could get the crib and then buy some used stuff off Craigslist and paint it.  It would be a lot cheaper that route.   Thankfully our hand me down furniture is amazing quality, solid wood, etc so we are definitely wanting to hold on to those pieces instead of buying new.

  • Thanks.  I'm definitely thinking I will end up buying a brand new nursery set (convertible) and just dealing with it.  :)  I like the advice of having the crib for DD in the event that the transition to a toddler bed doesn't go as planned.  Of course, baby #2 will likely be in my room in a co-sleeper for about 2-3 months anyway.  LOL...

Sigh, 2U2 poses some challenges. :)

  • I let DD keep all her furniture and recommend it. Not only does it take any time limit/pressure off the toddler bed transition, but it also helps to maintain their seance of normalcy with the new addition.

Your LOs aren't going to know of one has "splurge" furniture and one has "budget" furniture, so I wouldn't worry about cost that much, either.

  • E moved out of his crib before Lo was here but he got all new furniture and then when Lo came she got all new furniture. E didn't have a full bedroom set in his nursery. Lo does now but the set is very baby and her crib converts to a full bed. If we have a third we will buy them a new crib if its a boy, nothing if it's a girl. Lo will move into a toddler bed we already own sometime in the next year and will get new dressers eventually. What she gets as a big bed will be determined by whether or not the crib is being used. The last person to use the crib as a crib will get it as their regular bed.
  • My two will be 16 months apart but we recently got a nice toddler bed (link below) for DS. I figured this was a cheaper alternative for us since we're on a budget. When DS2 arrives he will use DS1's crib and DS1 will just use the toddler bed. As far as furniture goes the toddler bed matches the nursery set perfect so I think I will just order the same dressers again. I love them and in the end I'll save a few hundred since I didn't buy a second crib. DS1 has been napping in the toddler bed with no problems so I don't think we'll have a problem later on. I have the open side pushed up against the wall so it gives the same feel as his crib.
