Hi -- I've loved the name Declan for a long time and didn't get to use it last time (since we had a girl). Now I see the name pop up a lot and it's risen on the SSA list (from 2010 to 2011) dramatically.
My name is Jennifer so I've always been anti-very popular names. On the other hand, I'm not looking for an "out there" name but just not one that's trendy or super common.
Does anyone have thoughts on how common Declan is or is becoming?
Thanks! Jenny

I believe there's potential for it to become the next Aiden.
I also believe demographics play a part in the rise in popularity with this name. I know personally, in the greater NJ/NY/Pa area, Irish names are quite popular- I know a few Declan's IRL, while friends in the midwest have never heard of it.

I have been wondering the same. We are highly considering it, and recently I've heard 3 in the past 2 days.
I keep thinking he'd be ahead of the trend slightly. However, if it rises quickly enough he might he in the trend.

We picked the name 4 years ago and I had never, ever heard it. Now.... I know of a couple other Declan's.
But... I dont' think it will ever be like "Jennifer"

Ha! This is exactly what I was going to post.
I don't know any Declans in real life, and DH and I just had a baby boy we named Declan. After our baby's name was announced at my job, a coworker emailed me to tell me he and his wife planned to name their baby boy Declan early next year. He was checking to make sure that was okay with me (which he totally didn't need to do but was a very polite gesture). That's the only other Declan I've heard of--and they may end up changing their baby's name before he's born.
I have an aversion to extremely popular names, and I had the same fear. DH and I talked about it at length before we decided to roll with it anyway. My heritage is Irish, and DH and I both love Ireland. I wanted to honor that, and the name had a lot of meaning for us both. I don't think it's going to be the next Aiden, although I could be wrong. I really hope it remains out of the top 100.
