Hi all, I haven't stopped by in awhile, I'm the foster/soon to be adoptive mom of the 2 year old with PTSD, if you remember me.
Last week the ST recommended that we put Owl in preschool at least a couple days a week, it would be good for her social skills and good for her overall. Owl has selective mutism and she tested at the low end of average for motor skills, her lowest area being visual motor planning scored at 18 months. She is also seeing mental health twice a week.
All of this is to say that Owl is pretty much an average 2 year old with a few quirks. What type of preschool would fit her needs best? My first thought was Montessori but the closest is in a bad area and the rest are too far.
Re: Preschools?
She is an anxious kid who avoids challenges so I see where Montessori could be a bad choice, she needs a school where they see her abilities and push her in challenging situations rather than doing things for her.
We are currently working with a small intervention center, they don't offer anything other than evals and speech, OT, and mental health therapies. We have an evals scheduled with RC on Dec 6th so they can take over the services.
There are still questions about cognitive issues, they think everything is mainly trauma based but that there may be some cognitive stuff going on. Our current intervention center is referring us to a private neurologist so we can finally get some testing done, the children's hospitals around here are booked until at least summer 2013.
Two Mommies Healing Hearts
I was where you are in August!
You know your child best. Try placing him in a preschool which fits your needs for him. However, if they find that it is difficult for him to be in the school without extra assistance, then I encourage you to find out about an evaluation for Early Intervention (EI) (Birth - 2.5yo) or Child Find (3-5yo), for not only placement but assistance as well, so your child will be able to succeed.
EI/Child Find is able to evaulate your child on his/her development and provide assistance not only for placement, but for assistance (PT/ST/OT/Mental Health) within the school too! The DoE made this service to allow children with special needs to get the help they need while also making sure they are not losing out on socialization or their education!
Now, if you still want to continue with his/her private OT/Mental Health thats great! You could continue with that if you so choose to, in addition to the schooling assistance.
