Im looking for good strategies to convince ds to hold still during a diaper change. He loves to kick, which doesn't work well during a poopy diaper. I have tried disstraction, which sometimes works if he likes the toy or book I give him, but somettimes he jusst throwa it. Plus itt seems like I am encouraging him to be dependent on my giving him a distraction.
Re: squirming during diaper change
DD does the same. The only thing that sort of works is putting on some music. She stops to listen and I change the diaper as quick as possible.
LFAF Summer 2016 Awards:
I remember when I was going through the boards with DS1. A woman ACTUALLY suggested pinching your LO on the thigh to get their attention. I do not recommend this approach.
The stickers seems like a really good approach seems like it would be a really good distraction.
I took the bell off of DS1's trike and I let DS2 ring it while I do a dipe change. It seems to work pretty well.
I give her the diaper to hold while I'm getting her cleaned up. That way she feels like she is helping, and she will just lay there still holding the clean diaper for me.
I'm figuring out this is how to get everything down now, she's got to feel like she's helping. So- If I'm trying to do her hair in a pony tail, I have to let her hold the brush while I'm putting it up, etc.
Keep them distracted!

Stickers and asking them to help out are both good and often work for us, too. Lately, when she's being really squirmy, I ask DD to cooperate with me for one minute, and start counting backwards from 60 (like I'm counting down for a minute), and DD stops squirming and pays attention for some reason. I do it as a last resort and not all the time, so maybe that's why? I stop the countdown and remind her to cooperate if she starts rolling over or something, and start counting again when she stops. I never usually get below 25 or so before I'm done.
I've put a little basket within my diaper changing basket that has some distractors--there's a clear water bottle filled with colored beads. So it can be shaken and crunched, etc. I also have (and this works the best) is one of those microphones that plays music and you can sing in to it. Works like a charm.
but isn't this whole phase the most annoying thing?! And it never fails that it's the dirtiest diaper ever that they squirm the most.

Notes:
We have this problem, too. I pretty much give her ANYTHING that's new/exciting she can play with for a couple of minutes, and I don't even lay her down until I have the diaper and wipes as easily accessable as possible (I even tear 3-4 wipes apart first). Sometimes I sing a silly song and make faces at her. Whatever it takes! We went through a squirmy phase around 10-11 mo, and it's starting again around 13 1/2 mo.
I give her another diaper to hold, or the remote. Something she doesn't normally have.
I may have to try the sticker idea.

The only thing that works for DS is books. We have a few of his favorites that he only gets to look at while being changed.
I love the sticker idea. Am totally going to buy some stickers today (if I can drive through this snow).
That sounds like a good idea, but I can see my DD eating it.
