pregnancy allergy to rings?

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this!!! I've had to remove my wedding rings because I've apparently developed an allergy to them this pregnancy. The skin started to get red, then itchy with bumps, and now it is really dry. I feel so naked knot wearing them, but I guess I have to for now!! Anyone have this before, and did it go back to normal after delivery? This hasn't happen with my previous two.

Re: pregnancy allergy to rings?

  • I haven't experienced this, but I have friends who have.  Pregnancy hormones can do weird things!  One of my friends was able to go back to wearing them regularly, the other seems to have developed and allergy of some sort and now can only wear certain types of jewelry for long periods of time.  She usually wears her wedding rings though, I'm pretty sure she just removes them at night, maybe during the day too when she's just at home.

  • YESSS!! I've been dealing with this since 1st tri. I can only wear my rings on my left hand for a few days in a row, then I switch to my left hand while my left heals (for whatever reason, my right hand is not allergic to the rings). I saw my regular doctor in 1st tri but he didn't seem to think it was pregnancy related. Either way, DH and I have already discussed options if after LO comes I still have reactions to my rings. It's been frustrating and awkward getting all the glances when I don't wear my rings. Hoping this is temporary for both of us!!

  • i got red rash's under my rings too and had to take them off in my first and haven't really worn it since then!

i found because my hands were swelling water would get under the ring and then cause the rash - not sure i was allergic but i had a reaction for sure

  • I have not had an allergy to my wedding ring yet, but not-pregnant jewelry that isn't gold/platinum makes me break out in a rash.
  • My MIL had this happen to her.  It took a while to wear-off for her, too.  Now she has rheumatoid arthritis so she can't wear them.  She's worn her rings on a chain around her neck for a long time.

I haven't had this happen, but agree with this PP that swelling is probably causing water and/or soap to become trapped and irritate your skin.

This started for me before getting pg.  now it's even worse. I didn't wear my rings at night, and now they get so bad that I don't wear them at all. I miss them :(

  • This has happened to me as soon as I got pregnant.  It's only my wedding rings on my left hand.  A rash develops where the rings are and it is itchy, dry, and can be painful.  I have no problems with the ring I wear on my right hand though.  I just deal with it and continue to wear my rings to work everyday and whenever in public to avoid the awkward stares but take them off at night and while at home.  It must be normal : )

I thought this too! Maybe even a fungal or yeast rash. But when I asked my midwife after trying everything over the past 2 months, she said it was an allergic reaction since the skin is now hard and dry. She said pregnancy and all the hormonal changes in the body can do this sometimes!. So weird since I haven't had any problem with my other two!!
Glad I'm not the only one dealing with this though!!!

  • I haven't had this happen during this pregnancy yet but it started happening towards the end of my first pregnancy. It was awful! It lasted until DS was a couple months old, and I just wore my rings when I was out but they came off as soon as I got home. I don't remember what I used on it (some OTC cream) but it did finally go away. I did find that it got worse if I washed my hands with my rings on since water would get trapped in there. I'm hoping it doesn't happen again this time.

  • Try just wearing one. a friend of mine gets this when she's not pg. If she wears her band and engagement ring together she gets the rash/dry skin thing going on. So, she typically just wears her band on a day to day basis.

  • Yep!  This happened to me.  It didn't happen with DD1 just this pregnancy.  I get a red rash that itches and just assumed it was eczema.  I now have mt wedding rings around my neck.  It sucks  because my fingers aren't even swollen..
