Thanks you guys for the advice. I think, if she couldn't use her thumb she would be ticked, but maybe I should try to get a pair of thumbless ones for short trips where they are probably going to be thrown in the back of my car as it is.
I bought her a pair of thumbless knit mittens at a craft fair for $4 which I keep strung through her coat, I also found some toddler mittens with a thumb that are WAY too big for her, but she loves the thumb in them, as soon as I put them on her she starts waving and playing with her hands. It's too cute. I do want to find her a pair of mittens with thumbs that fit her better though. I tried putting the thumb on first then putting on the mitten, but by the time the mitten was on the thumb was out. I guess it was easier to put the whole thing on then wiggle her thumb into them.

This. They sell them at Gap, too (for about four times the price). The Target mittens are great, just like putting little socks on their hands.
