How did you feel after giving birth?

Someone asked this on one of the other boards, but I want to know how the MoMs felt after giving birth. So ladies, did you feel lighter after giving birth to your 2+ babies? If so, did the feeling come right away or did it take a while?

Re: How did you feel after giving birth?

  • I had a c-section, and I felt a lot worse. The abdominal pain and gas and constipation and not being able to move or sit easily was really hard. I felt gradually better as the weeks went on.

  • Unlike the pp, my c-section recovery was easy peasy.  I must have been lucky.  After being hospitalized for 5 days, I had to keep reminding myself to take it easy because I felt totally fine.  The little ones didn't come home with us, so I'm sure that made my recovery alot easier and quicker.  I did have awful constipation.  The doctor had me on medication for it, and yet it didn't do anything.

  • Physically?? I felt a million times better almost instantly. Mentally and emotionally?? I felt extremely overwhelmed at the thought of leaving the hospital with 2 little babies.

  • Lighter! I had a c/s, so it took awhile to move easily.

  • SO MUCH lighter - right away!  I was so happy to be able to breathe and eat more than 2 bites of food without feeling like I was going to break in half.

  • I definitely felt lighter! I had issues with posterior pelvic dysfunction during pregnancy, and that took several days to clear up, so I still wasn't able to really walk very well. I will say that my post-baby body was really shocking to me at first - flabby, saggy belly, ENORMOUS boobs once my milk came in - I almost fainted when I saw myself in the mirror naked.  But I FELT better!

  • I instantly felt like a million bucks. I lost all of the weight I gained before I even left the hospital at 4 days pp (27 pounds total, I was all belly) and I was up and walking around our room within about 6 hours. My c-section recovery wasn't bad at all except for the insane constipation but if you keep up on your medicine for that (which they wouldn't give me in the hospital...grrr) you should hopefully be just great! Good luck!

  • I had a vaginal delivery after 11 weeks of bed rest. I felt pretty wobbly and weak in my legs for 2 days, but I don't know about necessarily feeling lighter. I did lose 15lbs before leaving hospital 2 days after delivery though. My body adjusted to new weight and being able to walk again pretty quickly.

  • I felt instantly better after baby B was out (vaginal delivery) and was thrilled I could take really deep breaths.  It took about 24 hours to realize I had broken my tailbone in labor and that kind of sucked.

I think you do feel alot better in some ways but those first few weeks are tough, your bottom hurts, constipated, bleeding nipples - not things you've probably experienced before.

  • The second my OB broke Baby A's water I instantly felt better.  I could breathe for the first time in months.

About 30 minutes after I gave birth I got up and walked to the bathroom, changed my gown and cleaned myself up unassisted (the beauty of an unmedicated birth).  I felt sore, but about a million pounds lighter, and just so relieved to have my pregnancy behind me and my babies in my arms.

    This exactly.

Not to scare you, but you asked! I've never been so miserable as I was in the days after that c-section. I've had other surgeries, but this was the worst.

But, after my singleton was born (vaginal birth) I felt great! The nurses were surprised to find me up and cleaning up the room a couple hours after she was born. It was really weird to have my stomach feel so soft though, I wasn't used to it.

  • I could breathe a million times better as soon as they pulled the second baby out. He was super high up in my ribs so it was an amazing feeling to be able to breathe again! :)  I had an emergency hystorectomy so my recovery was probably easier than others, as I didn't have to deal with any cramping or pain from my uterus.  Not by choice, but I had to get up and walk from a bed to a wheelchair and then get into a bed a few hours after my surgery and it was doable, I showered the day after.  The WORST part for me was the constipation, way too much TMI for that, but it was insane.  Other than that I felt great, I never had much incision pain and parts of my stomach are still numb.

  • I felt instantly deflated when they pulled them out during the c-section but for the first few days after my belly just hung there and was uncomfortable with my incision.  After birth your uterus is still enlarged and takes around 6 weeks to go back down to normal size.  While your still in the hospital it will be about the height of your belly button and it should feel firm.  The nurses will be checking this frequently as part of your postpartum assessment.
  • I felt much lighter immediately, and couldn't believe how much my stomach went down just from the delivery.  But, I had a severely herniated disc that one of the babies must have been pushing so it didn't hurt while I was pregnant, but immediately created pain when my spinal wore off...of course, that's an unusual circumstance. Other than that, even with the c-section, I felt pretty good after a couple days.

  • I was very fortunate to deliver vaginally. I felt so much better once the doctor was done getting blood clots out - that part I never want to think about ever again. Another one of those things no one ever told me about! My epidural had worn off by that point.

Anyway, once I got up to shower for the first time I felt amazing. Laying flat on my back and being able to see my feet was awesome! I kept rubbing my hand over my belly. I was happy to see it again.

  • In terms of all of the hardships of pregnancy - heartburn, breathing, etc... I felt immediately better.  I did end up having a c-section, so I would say that took a good 2 weeks to feel ok enough not to take pain meds.  I'm now just over 3 weeks pp and still hurt a little (incision), but feel pretty good physically.  Like pp said, emotionally I'm feeling overwhelmed at the responsibility of taking care of 2 babies, at the same time.  Overall it's going well, but it's really hard work.  Harder than I ever imagined.

PS.  I lost 25 lbs during my 5 days in the hospital.  Than another 15 lbs (water weight) by 10 days pp.  I feel so thin, even though I still have a good 10-15 lbs to go.
