Natural Birth

When does baby drop?

I am 38wks 5 days and at my dr. appt was told I am a little over 1cm dilated and 70% effaced.  But still she couldn't feel the head and that hasn't dropped.  I had a ultrasound at 36 weeks and he was head down, so not likely he has changed position.  Then she said because I am 4'10" there is a 50/50 chance of c-section.  She also said by now he should have started to drop.

Are there any short moms out there that had this happen? Did their baby end up dropping?

Re: When does baby drop?

  • I dropped at about 39 weeks. You have time!

  • My baby didn't drop until right before labor. To be fair labor did start for me at 36.6. At my 36 week he wasn't engaged. Even when I got to the hospital I was at a minus 4 which is technically engaged but high, and when I started pushing he was a minus 2. Didn't stop him from practically shooting out of me in 15 minutes though. Every pregnancy and every baby is different. Try not to worry. If you were really concerned you could look up some techniques for opening your pelvis up more to try to get the baby to engage. Also, FWIW, my step sister is 4ft10in 90 pounds and she had an 8 lb baby vaginally with no meds so don't think it can't be done. Good luck!

  • With DD, I had an appointment and internal done at the end of 37 weeks and my OB said that she was still really high. 2 days later my water broke.

  • You have plenty of time to drop. And short women all over the world give birth vaginally. My sister is 5ft even and had an 8 1/2 pound baby vaginally.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I really want to have a natural birth so hopefully he decides to drop on his own. I know doctors try to make you aware of what could happen, but wish they provide suggestions on how to do everything possible for natural.
  • Mine didn't until transition in labor.

    Hmm

I would have a huge problem with my provider saying this to me.

As others have said, it's different for everyone.  Some babies don't drop into position until well into active labor.  I would imagine it can make things progress a little on the slower side though.  I don't know how your doctor will handle that if she's going into it with the mindset that baby should have already dropped and you have a 50/50 chance of C/S because of your height.  Eeek!  Hopefully it won't be an issue.  There's definitely still time for progress before you even go into labor.  GL!

  • She is only 1 of 7 doctors in the practice, and they rotate as to who will be on call for delivery.  I was reading about going to the chiropractor could help, and I haven't been in for an adjustment in a month, so maybe that will help things progress.

That might really help.  I had acupuncture with a chiropractic adjustment and DD dropped that same night.  Went into labor 4 days later (40w3d).

  • I'm an odd case, but my DD was engaged for a month before I went into labor.  It didn't seem to speed things up, she came at 40wks1d.  So there's that.
  • I agree with everyone else; babies are all different.  My Little Guy didn't drop until I was in labor and it was less then 6 hours.  He was at 0 station when I started pushing.  Some people walk around with their babies very low for weeks!  You just never know.  Good luck!
