We had our first snow today and it made SO start thinking about the weather when it comes to exchanges. We live in New England so snow can be an issue sometimes and SO was wondering what happens when there is bad weather on an exchange day. I told him I honestly was not sure, that maybe if a state of emergency has been declared that maybe that it would be considered ok to keep the child wherever they were but I'm not really sure. I think he is worried because at the moment he does all the transportation and it is every monday, wed and friday morning so there's more of a chance weather will cause problems at least once. Basically I was just wondering if anyone else lives in an area where weather can be an issue and what if anything you do when it comes to exchanges in that circumstance.
Re: Weather and exchanges?
Our CO doesn't have anything specific, but it has come up in the past. We split transportation so that the parent who's time is starting picks up the child. So it's up to that parent whether they feel it is safe to drive or not. We've only had this happen once due to ice, and pickup was the next day (as soon as the sun was out and ice was melting). We just worked it out with BM.
We've had bad ice on exchange days before with my ex and we both agreed it was unsafe for DD to be on the road so it wasn't really an issue for us.
This is what SO is worried about. BM would have no problem with LO needing to stay extra time with her but if SO had to stay with SO he doesn't think it would go well. She has already threatened to call the police or file false kidnapping charges when SO asked her to share the driving time since its in there CO. Now that snowy weather has started he is going to approach her about bad weather and he is hoping she will understand its really about keeping LO safe. And if she agrees he's going to get it in writing.
