Preemies

My baby is here!!

Hi ladies,

I'm still in the hospital and using mobile so I won't post my birth story and pics until he gets home but I wanted to make a formal introduction as a preemie mom. I gave birth to my 36 weeker 2 days on Monday, November 5th. He was ready to come. Went into labor and delivered him vaginally at 10:39 PM. He was 6 pounds 3 ounces. I had steroid shots at 26 weeks and he came out with some pretty healthy lungs and strong vocal cords.

I'll be looking for lots of advice. I had a high temperature after delivery which made them think I had an infection so he was sent to the NICU for 48 hour observation to be placed on antibiotics , IV and have labs done. It looks like he has no infection. He appeared to be a little jaundiced but his Bilirin levels aren't high enough to indicate that although they will run another lab tonight.
My plan was to breast feed exclusively however i don't have any milk yet. And because we want to get him off the IV quickly we started giving him formula.
I was pumping just to stimulate production and got some colostrum to come out. I let him suck for 5 minutes on each side and then give him the bottle. I have no idea if he's getting anything from me at all but he does latch on and he does suck. He takes a lot of breaks tho and falls asleep on me.
As far as formula feeding, he went from 10 cc's to eating 30 cc's this morning. No reflux issues and regular bowel movements. However, I'm getting nervous about my milk not showing up and I really hope I'm going to be able to feed him. Any tips of starting/increasing milk supply are greatly appreciated.

I leave the hospital today. He should be able to come home tomorrow or Friday. I'm really hoping tomorrow

Anyway.... I'm sure ill have lots of questions. But for now any advice on breast feeding..... Please!!!!!!! Lay it on me!!!!

  • Congratulations! While my first few days after birth are now a complete blur I think it is pretty normal for it to be a few days before it comes in. I wouldn't be too worried at this point. GL

  • congrats!  I hope your baby will be home with you soon!

Nurse and pump as often as possible.  It is tough because the NICU typically has strict fluids (intake and output) parameters that I often think many new moms that are exclusively nursing wouldn't meet in those first few days.  Hopefully once your baby is home you can nurse and nurse and nurse to get your supply going.  Definitely seek out a good lactation consultant and be patient with yourself.  None of it is easy, but it does get better.

     enjoy your new love

  • I don't have any advice on breastfeeding - my son was too little to BF and never did get the hang of it.  But I do know a little bit about pumping!!!  To get your milk to come in I would suggest pumping as much as you can.  My LC had me pumping at least 10 times a day those first few days until my milk came in.  It was pretty much every two hours during the day and three hours at night.  I also second the advice about eating a lot.  I was told to eat like I was still pregnant.  In my experience, you actually need more calories while pumping/breastfeeding than you did while pregnant.  Also drink lots of water.

Congrats on the birth of your baby and welcome to the board!

  • Congratulations!

I didn't have much luck with getting my milk to come in, but I did take some advice from the NICU, to get at least 5 hours of sleep at night, drink lots and lots of water and to power pump at least every 3 hours. Actually they say the best way to get your milk to come in is to put the baby on the breast.
