State Health insurance question

Hi,

My SO's DD has Mass health insurance through her mother,  He asked her mother for the insurance information, which he is supposed to be provided as per the custody order and she said she did not have the information and could not give it to him.  She said she would have to call the Department of Transitional Assistance to get it and she did not feel like doing it this week since she has not had to her daughter for a week(She had one less day than normal last week because of Halloween and then left her daughter with her mother the other days she had for some reason)  My question was, shouldn't she have an insurance card for her daughter that she would just have to copy the info off of? Or is this wrong?  I have never had state insurance but I assumed everyone had an insurance card.  SO tried calling the pediatrician for the info, which is what Early Intervention, who he needs the info for, recommended but that did not work and he mentioned trying to call Mass Health but I told him that I thought because of HIPPA, they would only talk to the provider, the mother, or am I incorrect with that?

I know this was long winded but basically I was wondering if it really is a difficult/long process to get the insurance info when you are provider so he knows if he should give her a few weeks to do it, even though it will effect early intervention, or if she is possibly just trying to control things.  Thank you

Re: State Health insurance question

  • Lurker here but thought I might help some. I'm not from Mass but in Ohio you get a card with policy #, primary care provider and the # to call for information. And even if you don't get a card most insurance companies(non-state) sends a packet of information regarding their healthcare program and what your plan entails. I would say she is trying to control things. She should have something with the policy information on it.

  • I also am not from Mass however with state insurance you should get a card with some info on it, usually the pediatrician, ID #(same as "group" #). State insurance cards from what I've seen don't have a lot of info on it though.

  • It sounds like BM just doesn't want to cooperate.  Even with State Insurance there would be some sort of identification card, although I'm not sure how much info would be on the card. If your SO has the name of the Pediatrician and the CO stating he is to have access to medical records, that should be sufficient for him to get some info from their office.  Dealing with the State will be a bit trickier though I imagine.

  • I agree there should be a card. DS is on our state's insurance right now and his card has his name, the primary provider and our copays on it just like any other insurance card.

  • My son has state insurance and he has a card. We have to reapply on an annual basis and get reissued a new card each year as well. Last year when we moved the new card got sent to the old address and the postal service did not forward it...it took me a few months to realize I didn't have a current card and why. So to play devil's advocate, she may have a good reason why she doesn't have a current card in her possession, though I agree it sounds simply uncooperative.

  • Just to echo what everyone else says if you call the state and show proof your dh is dad birth cert, custody orders etc they will release the billing and case number so you can give to the doc. You don't need your own card although it makes it 100x easier obviously

  • I'm from Mass.  I don't have masshealth, but have friends that do.  there is a card for each person with their name, policy number etc.  I would say your BM is being difficult.

look up the mass health number online and request a new card. you should just need the childs name, DOB, and address although you might need SS number as well.

    good luck

  • Well the whole thing got a lot more complicated.  When SO went to pick up LO today BM gave him a letter which said that she received a letter from his employer(which is a chain store/pharmacy), where SO works, that he was trying to enroll LO into insurance through his employer and that he is supposed to discuss these things with her and that he does not have there LO's best interest at heart.

The whole thing is strange because SO is a part time employee  and has only been there for 2 months.  He is not offered insurance so there would be no way to enroll LO into insurance there.  He has also never given anyone where he works LO's information, BM's name or her address so he has no idea how any of this could have happened.  She is also claiming him doing this, which he did not even do, is messing up LO's current insurance, not sure how?  She said she will give him a copy of the letter she got and he is then going to bring it to his manager to see what he should do.

She then still refused to give him any of LO's insurance information because of this situation.  He emailed her back with basically a summary of what I have written here and then also said he still needs to be provided with LO's current insurance info, which is still Mass Health.  He also finds it a little strange that she did not bring any of this up before now, including when he asked her for the insurance info on monday, then it was just having to make calls and stuff to get it and not having time, now theres suddenly this whole issue.  So hopefully it will get figured out soon.
